Let the bodies hit the floor! Boom! Boom! I love that song.
SPEAKER_03I do, and I love the fact that it's was it was the trailer for Rambo 4. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_06I said, Let the bodies hit the floor.
SPEAKER_03And he's he's coming up behind the guy with that knife that's basically a machete. Yes. And he's like, he's got that Stallone like sneer. And he comes up and he's like, boom!
SPEAKER_06And then the American I want to say something that was stupid.
SPEAKER_02Time now for Irritable Dad Syndrome, winner of the best chili competition four years in a row. Give it up for your hosts, Mike and Darren.
SPEAKER_05Hi, I'm Darren. I am Mike. Welcome to Irritable Dad Syndrome. This is episode 332. I am happy to be here. I've had not such a great day. And then when I pull into Mike's house, Mike's out in the front yard on a phone. Yeah. Right? And usually when he has a front yard conversation, that's not a good science.
SPEAKER_03So both Bess and I have a thing that we like to call the glare. And if we're having a rough one, uh we'll just give the glare to one another. And that that says a whole book's worth of uh stuff. Like, I'm not having a good time right now. I'll be with you soon. Yeah. And we use that nonverbal communication to get ourselves out of all kinds of situations.
SPEAKER_05You're kind of like the sheriff and the fugitive. I'll be with you in a minute.
SPEAKER_03That's right. That's right.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03So and the fun thing is that Bess has that glare when she's thinking. So every time she was she had that thinking hat on when we saw each other at OU, I always thought I was in trouble.
SPEAKER_05You know what?
SPEAKER_03I relate to that. Yeah. But anyway, Darren pulls up and I gave him the glare, but not an unwelcoming glare, just a I'll be with, like you said, I'll be with you in a moment. And then uh we decided to come down here, and um this is the fourth time we've tried to start this podcast.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and this podcast we do it, it's it's like therapy. Therapy, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I I said in one of the previous ones, we use you guys like an emotional toilet. We come in here and we just spit it all out. Yep. Uh we have fun doing it. We do. And it's it's we have to do something to get ourselves in a good mood. So welcome to the show. Ever since Frank's deer urine, that's what, ever since Frank's deer urine closed down and they put the other sign up, it's gone downhill. Oh, wow. I blame Frank and his deer piss.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'm excited to be here because over the weekend I was in Dallas, Texas. I don't know if y'all have ever been in Dallas, Texas, but I thought, stupid me, we're going to Dallas in uh October. It's not gonna be that hot. It can't possibly be that hot in October because it's fall. Yeah. Oh my god. I thought I was going to die of heat stroke. My company, we had a publicity event at the state fair of Texas, okay? So we had our giant thing set up. We had posters of our company. Funnel cake, y'all. Oh my god, funnel cake doesn't even begin to start the type of food that they had at the state fair of Texas. Deep fried Snickers bars. They had the deep-fried Snickers bar, they had the deep fried Twinkies, pork nuts, they had deep fried pork nuts. They had, you could get a deep fried oat milk cream pie. Yeah. I had one. It was pretty good. They had cotton candy bacon, deer nuggets. Cotton candy bacon. Cotton candy bacon. Yeah, it's a giant, I mean, giant, thick, long piece of hard fried bacon, and then they wrap cotton candy around it. And my friend Audrey swore by it, and I was initially scared of it. Yeah. And I thought, hell, you only live once. Try the cotton candy bacon. I tried it and I liked it. And then I thought, that whole you only live once, this may be the thing that kills me.
SPEAKER_03It's some uh squirrel nubbins. No squirrel. Give your squirrel nubbin a rubbin.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they they had uh uh fried pickle pizza. Now I was scared of the fried pickle pizza. My company they gave us like a ridiculous amount of free tickets. So anything we wanted to eat, we could eat at the fair. So I went and I said, Yeah, I'll have a piece of the fried pickle pizza. And they slapped two giant pieces of pizza. I'm like, there's no way I can eat this. So I went and I found my buddy KC. I was like, Casey get over here. And he looks and I said, Do you want one of these? He says, Yes. So we ate it and it had like a pretzel crust. You'd smack your mom. It was so good. It was so good. Yes. But yeah, the food was good and the people were really cool. And at our activation event, at our publicity event, we had a giant thing there. TV. Teletron. We we did have a giant TV with a monitor. Yeah. Yeah. That had uh a lot of our promos playing and that type of thing. But we had a football toss. So the our big giant poster there and had a football player jumping like he's trying to catch the ball. And you could throw the ball, and if you get it, there's a three-pointer, a six-pointer, and a four-pointer. So we're telling people if you get seven points or more, you win a prize. Okay, easy enough. So we had six footballs, and I don't know how many times I picked up the football. They would throw it and it would go over the thing, and I'd have to go around to the behind our tent. Kept getting caught in the net, they're rolling everywhere, and so it's like I'm trying to stay in the shade, but I had to keep going out into the sun and get these footballs. And after a while, my hands just smelled like ball.
SPEAKER_04I felt so old, Mike.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I felt so old because like every five or ten minutes, I'm like, I've got to tap out. And I would go beside our event where there was some shade, and I was drinking water as hard as I could possibly drink it. But I mean, it was in the 90s. I'm like, they're never gonna invite me again because they're like, we can't take Darren, he's gonna die. He's a risk to us. They were all saying the same thing about themselves. It was so hot. It was a good time still. I met employees at my company that I never met before. This really cool guy, Chris, he lives in Knoxville, and then a new guy on our team, Jim. And I had a great time. So, despite the heat and everything, it was great being in Texas. Um getting there was an activity. Um, at the airport, at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Airport, CBG as you call it. And I'm in line and we're getting ready to go through security. And so far, everything is going just fine and dandy. And the guy in front of me starts chatting me up, and he says, Yeah, last time I was in security, I had a bottle of water in my suitcase, and they thought I was a terrorist. I'm like, you can't. He says, Yeah, yeah, that bottle of water, they sure did think I was a terrorist. I'm like, can you stop saying that? Can you stop saying that? Jesus. Do you not know anything about going through security? It's yeah, okay. You don't say that. But oh my God, we were uh waiting to get on the plane, uh-huh, and the dude with American Airlines says, uh, ladies and gentlemen, just keep in mind, you know, everyone has uh one overhead item and then a carry-on item, a personal item. We ask that if you have a small enough item to keep it under your seat and not in the overhead bin because there are limited amounts of overhead bins, and people, please, we're doing this for the needy, not the greedy. Oh. And I'm like, wow, do you preach much? Wow.
SPEAKER_03Plus, people need the overhead bins for their Transformer collection and all the other that they bring on board the planes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I know. So I got on and I'm sitting there. I get an aisle seat now. I used to want a window. I'm done with wanting the window seats. I always get an aisle because when we land, I have to stand up. And there's always that person who bitches, how come they stand up as soon as my sciatica? Yeah. Yeah. You ever had a sciatic nerve? Yeah, dude. But yeah, so I stand up. But anyway, that's why I always get an aisle seat. So I'm sitting there on the aisle, and this woman walks by and she puts her hand on the back of my seat and pushes it back a little bit, and then she says, Oh, I'm sorry. I said, Oh, that's not a problem at all. And then she says, Is this a problem? She starts starts shaking my seat. And I'm laughing. I'm like, Woman, what is wrong with you? And she goes, I don't know. Oh, okay. And so she sits down, and then like 10-15 people pass, and then this giant guy comes by and he barely brushes up against me. And he goes, Oh, I'm sorry. I said, No, man, you're all good, you're all good. And she says, Oh, so he brushes up against you, and it's not a problem. I'm like, hey, at least he was sincere when he apologized. She grabs my seat, starts shaking him again. I'm like, how do I attract these people? How do I have a bullseye on me?
SPEAKER_03Do I have a bullseye? You may. I do want to touch on the not standing up. So in my previous life, I traveled all the time. And I have been on a plane or two where everybody didn't stand up immediately when it landed. And it was a nightmare. Yeah. Because they waited until we got to the gate, and then everybody in the aisle stood up and they start rifling through their sh to get it out. Meanwhile, the rest of us are just sitting there waiting forever. Then they file out and oh, I forgot I left something over here, I forgot I left something over there. Took them forever to get off the plane, and then the the middle row got up, and then the window. It's normal for people to stand up. I like it when I'm on a plane, and everybody now gets up because they get their out. And then as soon as the lady at the front, what do they call that lady? The lady, the the the lady flight attendant. The flight attendant.
SPEAKER_05Used to be stewardess, yes. You can't call them a stewardess now because it makes you an That's right.
SPEAKER_03Lady or woman. I don't want to cut anybody out. It could either well, or the flight attendant.
SPEAKER_05Or a man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, or a man.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh lets people go out, then that middle crew is gone, and then everybody else can get up and get their stuff, and they're gone. The deplaning takes a lot less time. And like you said, if you've been sitting for three or four hours, it's nice to stand up immediately.
SPEAKER_05And it's like, hey, people quit judging me because I like to stand.
SPEAKER_03I I mean, I for like four or five years of my life, I was constantly on a plane here or on a plane there, and it never failed. Even through all the connecting flights, all the other flights, every flight, there's always some dip somewhere on the plane that as soon as the first person stands up, they uh gotta stand up as soon as the plane lands. Like, do they pay you guys to be on here? Are you like an air marshal for do you have like a a frickin' uh what is it, like the magic eight ball and you shake it and it's like, what am I gonna say today? Oh, uh, you gotta stand up as soon as it's oh no, wait, that's not right. It wasn't right. You know, it's just like stop it.
SPEAKER_05Let me ask you people something. What about me standing up bothers you so much? What could that be? Why? How? What about me standing up bothers you? Yeah, I just don't get it. I like it, but I'm not trying to cut in front of anybody. I still let, you know, the people in front of me, they left first.
SPEAKER_03If you're in the aisle, or I'm sorry, if you're in the middle seat or the window seat and the aisle person gets up, I like that because I take if I unlucky enough to be in the middle seat, then I take all my from the front and I place it in the seat that they were just dead. Yeah. So I just grab it and pick it up and go. It makes things go faster. It makes things go steady. It's like, well, why are you in such a damn hurry? Uh getting off a plane, I'm in a hurry. I'm not smelling the roses on a plane.
SPEAKER_05What does it matter if I'm in a hurry?
SPEAKER_03Am I gonna linger lovingly on a delta flight?
SPEAKER_05You know what? I think I'm gonna stay here for another 10, 12 minutes.
SPEAKER_03I like the way the cool blue of the call stewardess light shines off of the uh gray of the seat.
SPEAKER_05Off my bald ass head. Yeah. You know what? This is this is truly irritable dad syndrome. This is. We are in a mood tonight.
SPEAKER_03I tell you one thing that's kind of got me all I think I'm being a little too irritable to see it clearly, so I want to throw it out to you. Okay. So, you know, the Metallicas, the Metallica brothers, yes are playing the Mark and Joe Metallica. They're playing the fear. And Joe Metallica stood up, and uh, I don't have the quote, and I don't care enough to look it up. I mean, my phone's right here, and this is a production that we're 332 episodes in. It doesn't matter. I'm not gonna look it up. He basically said, uh, we're not like these other groups that are gonna pour our political message on you. There's gonna be no political message in our show tonight. We're here for rock and and something and whatever. And then everybody cheered. Well, now they're in the news and it's all over the social media with people. Uh the most common comment is uh and justice for all. Yeah. Dot dot dot. Like I I mean, right? I mean, come on. Yeah. But the point is, is that I it hasn't set well with me because I'm like, who's being political? Right. And so someone was helpful on on later on in the day, they said, Are you talking about Ed Sheeran? Are they like complaining about Ed Sheeran? Like, I don't Metallica, I don't think the Metallica crew, Metallica fans and Ed Sheeran fans, I don't think there's a lot of overlap there, but maybe there is.
SPEAKER_05Maybe. You know, but me. I was thinking of the last like the Eagles, the backstream always were the last acts to perform at this point.
SPEAKER_03The the fear, the guys that kicked it off, the U2 crew. Yeah, they're not political. I mean, they are well that's the thing. They didn't do anything political there at all. Like the political band that opened the sphere didn't do anything political. Because my first thought was that's the that's who they were talking about, but they didn't.
SPEAKER_05And it's because of U2 being at the sphere that Metallica did it. Because Lars is a huge U2 fan of it. Yes, and he said that he was like 10 minutes into it. We've got to do this. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That was one of my favorite comments. Um it was to uh Hetfield Joe Joe Metallica response to him saying they're not gonna they don't do any political music. And said, Have you met your drummer? It was odd. I I could see if Ed Sheeran, and I'm picking on Ed Sheeran, yeah, but I mean who else is like known for being I know YouTube's known for being political, but they weren't when they were there. But Roger Waters.
SPEAKER_05Mellon Camp.
SPEAKER_03Okay, Mellon Camp Springsteen. Oh, yeah. If any of them were playing and then Metallica was next, it follows. Like I see it. If Springsteen gets up and sings Pink Houses and then Born in Pink Houses, and then and then leaves, I could see Joe and Dave Metallica getting up there and saying, Look, we're not gonna go all political. Yeah. We're for little houses of all colors, not just pink. Right?
SPEAKER_05All colors, guys.
SPEAKER_03All colors. But it doesn't make any sense if like Weird Al gets up and then the next person comes up and says, you know, I'm tired of this serious music. We're gonna silly it up a bit. That's you know, it doesn't, it's just I don't know. So uh the dark cynical part of me, which is 99% of me, says he did it just to get their name out there. Yeah, but then I'm like, you're the Metallica brothers. Yeah, and you're at the sphere. Yeah, the sphere sells out before people finish saying the Metallica brothers are at the sphere. Yeah, it's sold out. That's true. So what are you doing? Are you do you need to sell tickets? I I don't I don't understand.
SPEAKER_05I don't know why he's trying to ruffle feathers, but no, you're right because yeah, they don't flat out say, you know, vote for this person or don't vote for that person. Yeah, but they do have messages in their lyrics.
SPEAKER_03They do, and that's like people were dead.
SPEAKER_05That's why, you know, that's their right.
SPEAKER_03They were saying, well, we're just not gonna go on a half-hour long political rant in between songs. I'm like, A, I don't know that you've ever done that. I've never seen I've seen them B, nobody else in this figure did that. Don Henley didn't talk about his ponytail. No.
SPEAKER_05Oh, remember the end of the innocence ponytail era? Like, Don, what do you do?
SPEAKER_03I started growing this when I found out the indigenous people. No, he didn't do that. My question is, what the hell? Bono, who is known for it. Oh my god. You two fans, we we wait for the moment. There's gonna be a moment where Bono says, you know, and I'm like, here we go. All right, time to go get a beer, or you know, like take a break. You sit down for a second. You got a moment, let him do his thing. He didn't do it at all. Right, right. I just don't know who the message was for.
SPEAKER_05I don't either. But uh well, I was more concerned with that black stripe that was in because he like put a reverse skunk on his hair.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he did the la pew.
SPEAKER_05Uh yes, he did. He did the reverse la pew. And uh, because I'm like, I don't remember Donnie Metallica having the black stripe in his hair.
SPEAKER_03If there's one thing that positive that comes out of this, it's whoever was in the room with Dave Mustaine when this was published, because that had to be hilarious. Yeah. Watching Dave Mustaine read that and be, what the f yeah in my imagination, it's the same what the f that he gave when we heard mooing come from above the amphitheater. Yeah. That's a callback. Venomous Beaver, look it up.
SPEAKER_05Yep, yep. Good episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Oh, wait, it's the cows are banging. The cows are out there banging. The cows are out there banging.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. This is Steve Young, the comedy guy, not the football guy. And you are listening to Irritable Dad Syndrome.
SPEAKER_00This is um raisin brain. Not raisin brain crunch. Oh, same thing. Uh, not the same thing. Well, I'll tell you what, why don't you do the grocery shopping? Uh, and bang, you can get whatever you want. Great! It's it's not uh it's not that hard, Mom. It says crunch on the box.
SPEAKER_05Sadly, Mike and I uh have been fans of Breaking Bad for years since the original run. And one of my favorite characters on the show was RJ Middy, who played Walter White Jr. And we found out that he has uh passed away age 36. 34. Oh 34, yes. What a talented, what a talented actor and just a great guy. And I read what Brian Cranston said about him, and he was crushed, absolutely crushed. And he said that you know, he says he had been texting with them over the past couple weeks. They were supposed to meet for lunch uh soon, and he's like, I don't know if meeting for lunch would have uh stopped what happened.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, horribly sad. The whole cast of Breaking Bad seems to have like stuck together. I mean, at least uh at least Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul, like they're best buds, they're just going around all over the place.
SPEAKER_05Well, they're uh godfathers to each other's children, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then Hank pops up every once in a while, and of course, uh Saul is Bob Odenkirk, I know his real name, but anyway, they they all seem to kind of hang together, and it it feels like a little bit of a family, so it's it's weird that that he's not with us anymore.
SPEAKER_05I know. He was just such a great character, yeah. He did just an incredible job of playing, carried a lot of the weight of the humanity of that story.
SPEAKER_03He was a lot of that, a lot of that baggage was on his shoulders.
SPEAKER_05I really hoped that not only would they do the Jesse movie, but we would eventually find out what happened with Skylar and Walter Jr. You know, because eventually that money that he put away, spoiler alert, eventually that money was going to get to them. So I always wondered what happened if Walter Jr. Flynn and uh Skyler and their daughter, and I can't remember the daughter's name on the show.
SPEAKER_03Is it Hannah?
SPEAKER_05Uh I don't remember Haley, but I wonder if they had any type of any kind of normalcy growing up. Anyway, RJ Middy, great actor, and I feel so bad about how it all ended for him.
SPEAKER_02This portion of Irritable Dad Syndrome is brought to you by Lotus Biscoff Cookies. Hi, I'm Dave Lay, and I love traveling. It seems like every couple of months I get the urge to visit people and places anywhere on this great planet, and that's why I'm a big fan of Lotus Biscoff cookies. Whenever I'm flying and the stewardess asks if I want a snack, I say, Hell yeah, I want a snack, and make that snack a pack of Lotus Biscoff cookies. Since 1932, Lotus Biscoff cookies have been made with all natural ingredients. They're crunchy, and that caramelized flavor has made them the preferred choice of every major airline that serves snacks. Lotus Biscoff cookies. Mmm, now those are some good cookies. Back to you guys in the studio.
SPEAKER_05One of the best things about the flight was that I had the Biscoff cookies. I was so excited to have Biscoff cookies. Cookie! Apparently, that's an American Airlines thing. So I was so excited, they were coming down the aisle, and uh, and I had you know, I was leaning over looking, and I saw them breach down, and I saw the guy hand a red package of something, and I knew I knew those were cookies. I'm like, yes. So the lady sitting next to me and her uh I believe it. Her husband, may have been her boyfriend, could have been her brother. I don't think they were related that way, the way they were interacting with each other. That's either here or there. So she had put on the mask on her face uh to keep the sun out of her eyes, one of them uh eye masks, and I know that I would not want to miss out on the cookies, so I had tapped her on the arm and I said, Hey, do you want the cookies when they come by? She's like, No. I was like, Okay, all right, okay. I I won't bother you. Yeah, I almost asked the guy, can I have her cookies? No, but I didn't because I was trying to be good. But I was thrilled. I had Biscoff cookies on the way to Texas, and I had Biscoff cookies on the way back from Texas. I'm a happy guy if I get my cookies.
SPEAKER_03So Delta does a bisque uh a biscoff cookie. Oh, they do, yeah. Okay, and it pairs well with their coffee because you just dip it, you dip it in like less than a second. He just goes whoop whoop, and it just gets it at the right. What do you do? They're whoop whoop whoop whoop. It gets a just uh the right, and I know I'm not using this word correctly, but it sounds right. The right timbre. Yeah, right timbre of biscoth with the timber. Tamber. The timbre. The timbre of the biscoff and the coffee, uh huh. It strikes the right timbre. Tamber.
SPEAKER_05You keep using the hoard. I don't think it means what you think it means.
SPEAKER_03The timbre. And it almost do this all day. Tamber. Tamber. It almost melts in your mouth. It's beautiful. It is. Uh, and you just get just a touch of the coffee goes whoop. It's right there.
SPEAKER_05I'll have to do that. Yeah. I mean, you can buy the biscoff cookies at uh the store. Yeah, it's a good thing. I think I know it's not the same. Right. It really isn't. They taste better on an airplane.
SPEAKER_03Because you need that airplane coffee too, because they get it damn near lava hot.
SPEAKER_05I've never had airplane coffee.
SPEAKER_03Just a touch of mold in it. And you that's what sells it, right? So everybody was anti-mold until the blue mold got in the cheese, uh-huh. Right? And now mold is was on the front cover of GQ.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03Right? Uh but you get the bisco. Excuse me. You get that moldy delta coffee, and then you take that biscotti biscoff. Biscoff. Biscoff, and you put it right in there. Just the right, just the right tamper.
SPEAKER_05Just like penicillin tampo.
SPEAKER_03A millisecond or two. Uh-huh. Like that. Just enough. And then put it right in your mouth.
SPEAKER_05Well, if you leave, if you leave it in there too long, it falls apart. It does. And then it falls to the bottom.
SPEAKER_03Then you say, damn it, the whole flight's ruined. Right. And then there's kids and they're screaming, and it's like, sir, don't use that language. It's just, it's a bad time. Just boop, boop. Get that the right timbre. Tamber. Tamber. Just get it right in there. Just right in there. Right in it. Right in the nook. And the cranny. Oh. Yeah. It's a rough textured cookie. Uh-huh. When you've struck the right cord with it, it's smooth because that coffee, the surface tension of the moldy coffee, it smooths. It's like a smooth for an instant. It goes from a rough, very unappealing biscoff cookie to like a smooth, almost like one of those uh Reese's eggs in the in the Easter.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But you don't have time to admire it. It's something you just look at it just out the corner of your eye as it's on its way to the mouth. Because if you let it go cool, it tastes like coffee grounds that have been laying in a in the mud. Yeah. You got to get it in there. Uh you got to get that timbre. Tamber. And then keep that heat in the timbre and slot it right in there. Don't miss. You'll burn your cheek. No.
SPEAKER_05But it's. Yeah. Yeah. Good times.
SPEAKER_03And I have asked for other people's cookies. I did at one, I did at least on at least one flight, somebody wasn't eating their cookie. Are you going to eat those? Because my moldy coffee is still at the right temperature.
SPEAKER_05Is it like penicillin moldy? Or what I don't know what you mean by moldy coffee.
SPEAKER_03If you drink coffee at a if you drink coffee at a a uh a nice coffee place, not Starbucks, not Duncan or any of this other I'm talking about go to a nice place in Colorado that sells you uh sells you the coffee in a green mug, uh-huh, right? Yeah. Ceramic. Yeah. Right? Yeah. And some lady with braids in hippie.
SPEAKER_05And yeah.
SPEAKER_03Doesn't ask you if the sugar you want is ste is the uh sugar in the raw, tells you we dip a sugar cube in there and that's all you need. That kind of coffee, right? Yeah. And then take that and put it in an industrial steel container in the dark in a plane for about a year.
SPEAKER_01Yes, science.
SPEAKER_03And then just the right amount of microorganisms start to grow. Some call them mold. Uh-huh. And when they get heated up, they get to that biscoff, they strike the right tamper. Tamper. They do. It's like the blue meth. You mess it up. If there's a fly in the room when you do it, you're screwed.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you don't want to you don't want to burn your mouth.
SPEAKER_03But man, when you do hit it right, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Good stuff. You'll embarrass yourself. Yeah, yeah, just like we're doing now. Speaking of flavors and food, uh, we got an interesting question sent to us. And uh, I've got it right here. Let me pull it up. Is um uh okay, dear irritable dad syndrome, longtime fan. Does Mike like mint? I do. Yeah, I do like mint. Because I do too. I love mint. My wife does not like mint.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Every once in a while I go on a tear. I go, mint chocolate chip ice cream to me looks too much mint. It looks disgusting most of the time, and then every once in a while I'll I'll go through a two-week period and best can she will concur with it. She'll attest, thank you, to it where all of a sudden our freezer is just full of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Okay. And I'm getting mad at anyone not eating it. Something about eating something that's green and not killing me, and then having the little chocolate chips in there, Tillamook is the right way to go here. Okay. And and it it could because they strike the right cord between a spritely mint and a sultry cream right in there. It strikes the right timber. Sultry tamber. Yeah, the timbre. Tamber. It's good.
SPEAKER_05Right. So I prefer like a candy cane, like at Christmas time. Now I do do that every time. So I think the candy cane is better than because I think like mint chocolate chip is too strong a mint. Yeah. But now if I'm at a restaurant and you're walking out and they have the little mints, yeah, hell yeah, I'll tell them.
SPEAKER_03Mint chocolate chip is meant for Vikings. That's right. And the the candy cane mint is meant for little kids and M-I-N-T for Vikings, not M-E-A-N-T. It's it's meant for like little kids and infeminate ferrets. Which is fine. Sometimes you feel like uh sometimes you feel like a ferret. Did you say a ferret or a parrot? Either one. That's a tie-in to last week's episode.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Charlie started cross-country this year. First time he's ever done cross country. Started out, and they have different teams within the team. So you've got like the open team, then you've got the vars, the junior varsity, all this stuff. The closed team, the seventh grade and eighth grade, and the timbre team, all that.
SPEAKER_05Tambre.
SPEAKER_03So the 2026 GMC Greater Miami Conference Championship was yesterday? Yesterday.
SPEAKER_04Yesterday.
SPEAKER_03And his team won.
SPEAKER_04Yay!
SPEAKER_03And he's got the uh trophy there. He ran his ass off. Yeah. And he and I ran the course. Well, he ran the course. Uh-huh. I you sat on the sidelines and sucker chip ice cream. No, no, I lightly jogged the course. This is the day before, because he wanted to run it before because he he likes to prep. And uh boy, it's it's not easy. And uh he tore it up and uh he was sweating like all get out. But yeah, they won, so they get to go to the next meet next week in Yellow Springs, which is the home of Dave Chappelle.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_03Of Chappelle Show. Chappelle Show. Yeah, so I might meet Dave Chappelle.
SPEAKER_05Maybe.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because I mean there's nothing to do in Yellow Springs, but there's not go to the cross-country meet.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Well, congratulations to Charlie.
SPEAKER_03I'm proud of him. The dude is is kicking uh all kinds of tail. Yeah. Badass.
SPEAKER_02This portion of our show is brought to you by Blockbuster Video.
SPEAKER_05Have you ever eaten at Denny's? I have a couple stories from Denny's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah in Huntington, yeah, back in the day.
SPEAKER_05So the hotel where we stayed in Dallas is in a suburb of Dallas. And when I say there is nothing nearby this hotel, there's literally like nothing nearby. You can walk two blocks and there is a hamburger restaurant called Rodeo Goat. Uh-huh. I don't understand the name. I don't understand the name because they don't serve goat burgers. Uh-huh. Right? It's Rodeo Goat. Yeah. And they have really really good hamburgers. Okay. And then if you go a little bit further down and hang a right, there is a uh a nicer restaurant. But as far as you know, walking someplace and getting breakfast, the only place in town really is the Denny's. So when I checked in, this woman who I work with, Cynthia, she and I got there and we weren't able to check into our room. She and I both had our own room. And uh she's like, I'll tell you what, let's go to Denny's. This Denny's lacked lacked a lot of uh important things. Yeah. One of them was uh service. Uh food is pretty good. The first part of my Denny story is we're sitting down and Cynthia lets out a cheer, a woo-hoo.
unknownWoo-hoo!
SPEAKER_05The excitement of which I had not heard from her or any other woman in quite some time. And I said, Are you okay? And she says, Yes. And she points at the menu, and there was a 55 plus menu, and she's like, I'm eligible for 55 plus. She was so excited, and then I realized, well, I'm eligible for 55 menu. There you go. There you go. You know, in the 55 plus menu, the meals are like five dollars cheaper. Are they really? I'm so excited. Okay. Like I was saying, Denny's was the only game in town. So the next day we were there, we went to Denny's again for breakfast, and I'm there with this buddy Kyle, and we're sitting there, and we have a waitress, and she comes over and I'm ordering an omelet, and I said, Can I get fruit instead of the hash browns? And she says, No. So she says, No. And then she says, again, let me go back. I'll push some buttons. Oh, and if I can push a button, if I can make it happen, I'll make it happen. But I don't think I'm gonna make it happen.
SPEAKER_03Try to tell her to push the fruit button.
SPEAKER_05So she's like, no. And I'm like, it's okay, I'll have the hash price. And then she leans in a little bit. She goes, I can get you red skin potatoes. Oh, you want redskin potatoes?
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05And I'm sorry, but that's how she talks about it. Guatemala? I don't know. Okay. You want redskin potatoes? I'm like, yeah, that's fine. I'll take yes, that's fine. Yeah. So she brings me the red skin potatoes, and then she leans in again. You know what's good on them? Do you know what's good on those potatoes? I'm like, Was Danny Trejo giving to a senior?
SPEAKER_03Danny Trejo, I'll bring you red skin potatoes.
SPEAKER_05Machete. So she says, You know what's good on those potatoes? I said, What? And she goes, 57 sauce. I said, I said, I'm sorry, what? 57 sauce? I said, uh oh, yeah, okay. Not your crazy air. And she goes, I I bring you some 57 sauce. So she brings me the 57 sauce. And yeah, you know what? It does taste pretty good on the red skin potatoes. So I ate my food, and me and my buddy Kyle were getting ready to leave when another guy who I worked with was there and he says, he said something smart to me, and I had a comeback for him. And she says, What are you talking to you like that for, man? She says, I'll tell you what, you guys, you business people, you go on a business trip and everybody's looking at everybody's legs. First thing you guys do is shave your legs. I said, What are you talking about? She says, Yeah, you go on business trip and you shave your legs. I'm like, I haven't, yeah, I haven't shaved my legs. My legs are actually, I mean, they're not the hairiest legs of anybody, but they're not shaved. And she goes, man, everybody looking at everybody's legs. I'm like, so it's not letting you deter the message at all. No. No. So I'm just like getting sexually harassed at Denny's. Uh-huh. I don't know what's going on with it. But yeah, so that was fun. And I didn't eat at Denny's anymore. I just either didn't eat. Well, no, I went and I ate at the state fair.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05They had the super hot dog. Okay. It was this giant, fat hot dog covered in chili and cheese. You had to eat it with a fork, and uh, everybody was concerned about me that I was gonna die. It's like if this is my last meal, okay. Yeah, okay. That's fine. We were at the state fair of Texas, and this was the same day of the Texas Oklahoma game. Okay, there was a giant college football game going on, and half the people there were wearing their Oklahoma jerseys, half the people were wearing their Texas jerseys. Big rivalry, right? And so they decided to get everybody these uh football jerseys with our company name on them. We had these blue football jerseys, and my last name was on their cocks. And so we're all walking around with our jerseys, and this is uh another time where we played the game, How Stupid is Darren? Because everybody has the number 26 on their jersey, and I'm trying to figure out why what's so significant about 26. And I pulled my buddy over and I said, Why does it say 26? And he said, It's uh it's 2026. Oh, okay, yeah, all right, yeah. I'm picking up what you're putting down. This looks so stupid. Maybe it was the heat got to me. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06Hi.
SPEAKER_05Bob drove me and two or three other people to the ho back to the airport. Now I am in gate D. And I don't know if you've ever been to Dallas airport or not. No. These gates are far apart from each other. Okay. It's not like your typical airport where you can like walk from one gate to another. So I'm in gate D, and I I check in, I go through security, and everything's fine. I had to go into the bathroom and wash my face and wash a lot of the sunscreen and and the sweat and reapply deodorant because I smelled horrible. But I put on a fresh shirt, and uh anyway, I get to my uh my gate and I'm sitting there, and I've got two or three hours to kill when I get a message on my phone that my gate has changed. We're no longer in gate D. I'm now in gate A. Okay. That's C B A, three gates away. Yeah. I'm like, all right. So I get all my stuff and I get on the Sky Tram, the SkyRail. Yeah. This son of a bitch, I climb onto that, and it's it's probably built to hold 40 people comfortably. Yeah, I'm thinking there was 250 people on this sky rail, and we're all packed in there like sardines. It takes off. I thought I was gonna completely fall. I can't reach any of the handles to hold on. So I've got my hands straight up pressed up against the ceiling. Oh my gosh. Hoping to God that I don't fall.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so we get to the first stop, it wasn't mine. The second stop wasn't mine. We get to the third one, I need to get off. All these people are trying to get on. Uh-huh. And all these people are trying to get off. It's like, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. Yeah. And this woman's like, excuse me. It's kind of like under the giant, everybody move. And she she was a short little thing too, but by God, she's like, excuse me. They moved, and I followed her.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And got out of there. So I go from like, let's say it was D20 to now my gate is A8. So I sit and I find gate A8 and I'm looking and it says Salt Lake City.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And I said, I know it says Salt Lake City, but is the next flight after this Cincinnati? And they said, I don't know. The dude says, I don't know. And I'm as nice as I can be. I said, Can you um can you look on that little computer there and see? And I said, You're at A20. I'm like, okay. I thought I was my phone says A8. He goes, No, you're at A20. So I go to A20 and I sit down, and there at A20 was a woman and her husband whose gate has been changed three times now. Yeah, they were trying to get to uh Fresno. I don't know where they were trying to go, but their gate kept getting changed and changed and changed. The lady sitting next to me, her gate was changed twice. Yeah. So I'm A20 waiting, and then I go up and I ask to make sure am I at the right gate? Goes, oh no, that's A39. Like, oh my God. So I went from D20 to A8 to A20 to A39. And finally, when I found my actual gate, I had 20 minutes before I boarded.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Wow. Wow. Oh my god. It was nuts. Now, listen, I've had it worse. I've had a plane where the engine broke. Okay. I've had my flight get canceled before. The situation where we had trying to get to Yosemite and San Francisco was a nightmare. So I'll take moving gates to gates to gates to gates over this. But I mean, when you almost die from heat stroke and you're exhausted. Yeah. And the only it's like the hotel where we stayed had a guy in the lobby who would make omelets. But you know, I'm kind of used to the continental breakfast where I can heat up a bagel or I can get some oatmeal or something. I was like, oh my God. And I was craving like fruit. I need something real because I've been eating fast food and Denny's and moving gate to gate to gate. I was about to lose my mind. But anyway, I got home safe, and that's all that really matters.
SPEAKER_02You're listening to Irritable Dad Syndrome. Congratulations for making it this far. The rest of the show only gets better from here.
SPEAKER_04Careful.
SPEAKER_05It's addictive. Last week we were uh laying in bed and Libby couldn't fall asleep, and so she's like, let's see if there's anything on. So we're going through the movies on our TV and she finds Supergirl. Okay. Like the new one? The new one, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah. We haven't don't. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's horrible. It is so horrible. I think the people who made the Supergirl movie, they were trying to make another Guardians of the Galaxy because that's how it looked. That's like the feel they were going for. Yeah. But Supergirl can't act. And even Aquaman is in this playing an ugly guy on a motorcycle or something. Okay. It was not good at all. And I finally gave up and just curled over, and I was like, I'm gonna fall asleep and just miss it. Turns out Libby had been asleep for way longer than that. But it's really, really, really bad. And the woman who is sitting on the plane in front of me was watching it on her phone. Yeah. So I mean, I was watching it over her shoulder without volume, and it still sucked. It's a horrible, horrible movie. I cannot not recommend it hard enough.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I don't need to I don't need to see it. No, I've been down here in the movie no watching mood, and I've just skipped by it.
SPEAKER_05It just I didn't it doesn't it's really, really not good. Now I enjoyed the last Superman movie. Oh yeah. I thought that was awesome. Yeah, and he has a cameo in this, didn't save it. Okay, could not save it. Even the dog uh couldn't save this one. Now, a movie that you saw twice, yeah. I finally watched with Cameron and Libby, I watched the back rooms. Okay, what'd you think? That movie's effed up.
SPEAKER_03So was Cameron familiar with the back rooms before Cameron had already seen.
SPEAKER_05I think Cameron saw it twice. He watched it with somebody and another friend of his wanted to go, so he went, I think he saw it twice.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um but was he familiar with the back rooms before seeing the movie? I think he had heard of it. Yeah, I believe he had heard of it.
SPEAKER_05Okay. So I'm watching it and I really appreciated it. Okay, I appreciated the movie. You don't see a movie like that. It was no, it was uh I know you can't say uh unique, yeah, and and you can't something can't be very unique, yeah, but this was more unique than uh most unique films. Yeah, I really appreciated it. I thought it was weirder than it was scary. I think that's that's the intuition. Yeah, it was just weird.
SPEAKER_03You're supposed to be unnerved, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And then the liminal space. It's it's because of liminal spaces, yeah. And uh did that word keep going through your head? Just be acting like they know what liminal space is. But you know, when I was a kid, uh huh, uh like if my brother had a had a wrestling match or something going on at school when I went, if it was on the weekend, I would go explore the high school on my own. Uh-huh. And I would have loved going through the back rooms by myself. Yeah. I mean, granted, I would never get out of there because I get lost, you know, in Kroger. So I would have loved, loved going through that room. But I liked how, you know, you look down there and like, I don't know, half a mile down the hallway, like. Wait, did something move? Yeah did something like pop? Yeah. And then the thing that was a what the what is this? And then, you know and the woman who's trying to get away, she's just like she's taking her sweet damn time. Like she's like kind of climbing through the thing, like climb faster.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So yeah, I it was I think they did a really good job. So the original, you know, the original idea, because it was made, the movie was made by the dude that originally made the uh it was a YouTube shorts, right? And yeah, kind of you know made little little movies about that and then finally made a large one. Anytime you have a movie like this that has a really, really, really cool premise, the more you ex like you naturally want to know more about what's going on. Um then the movie has to tell you more and more answers, and the more you understand about it, it's some of the the luster of it, the timbre starts to starts to go away. Just a just a smidge. And I I think they did a really good good job with it. Like the big thing with the backrooms or that or liminal spaces in general.
SPEAKER_02Liminal or luminal?
SPEAKER_03Yes, yeah. Is the mystery, right? Like you said, looking down this long hallway and did something just move? Well, did it or didn't it? And then what is it? And is it scarier not seeing it, or is it scary right up in your face going, you know? So but the rumor is that this is the start of a series of movies, right?
SPEAKER_05Knowing Hollywood and how things are going, they're probably gonna make 15 backroom movies.
SPEAKER_03And they kind of peppered that in a little bit with when they met the uh the scientist who I I love that dude. He's been in a few other movies. Yes, I know him. And um well, not personally. He said that you know, there's there's these are popping up all over the place. So it's like, well, there's your franchise right there. There's gonna be one by the Tasty Freeze, um, there's gonna be one over at uh behind Joanne's fabric. Behind Joanne Fabric. But the the idea that it kind of makes a copy of whatever comes into it, but messes up the copy almost like a bad photocopier. Yes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it remembers things just not exactly. Yeah. Kind of like me trying to tell a story on this podcast. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I I I dig that, and I have a feeling that as the sequels go, I hope they get weirder and weirder. Because it can go and get weirder. It can go one well, there's there's the whole they didn't do the whole there, there was a little bit of pools, but they just touched on that. But there's a whole other sub-genre, uh, sub-tambre, if you will, of liminal spaces that are surrounded that are based on pools. Uh-huh. Right? Just rooms of weird pools. Very penultimate, yeah. Very penultimate. Yeah. So um, there's that whole thing.
SPEAKER_05But I mean, I guess I'm invested now and I've seen it, and I'm like, well, I saw that.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, like the commenter here, like it's like Blair Witch. Yeah, the first Blair Witch was incredible.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god. And I I was so on board with the Blair Witch project.
SPEAKER_03I liked Blair Witch. I'm like, I think me and some dude in Milwaukee are the only two people that liked Blair Witch too. I thought it was good. It was a it was an actual movie.
SPEAKER_05I've never seen Blair Witch 2.
SPEAKER_03I I forget what it was called, the Tambre Priest or something. But it was a movie movie. It was a movie about the people making the movie. Uh-huh. And it, you know, it was it was I thought it was well done. And then it just got weirder.
SPEAKER_05Libby and I went to see that, and we got home, went into our apartment, turned on every light. Dude. Yeah, it didn't, yeah, it didn't have a room.
SPEAKER_03It was scary, but it creeped me out. I had a roommate that knew I went to go see it, and he thought it would be really funny if he went outside the window and started hitting the the window with a stick. Yeah. That was fun. That was fun. Yeah. You young'uns gotta remember back when the Blair Witch came out, the internet, it was everywhere that it was real.
SPEAKER_06Yes.
SPEAKER_03Like, and they did there were interviews, there were documentaries.
SPEAKER_05I worked with this woman. This wasn't excuse me. No, excuse me. I worked with this one where she swore up and down that it was real. I'm like, Susan, it's not real. She says, Yes, it is, Darren. I saw an interview last night. I'm like, no, you didn't. Yes, I did. I said, Where? She's on the sci-fi network. Susan. Sci-fi stands for science fiction. Yeah. Fiction is false. Yeah. It wasn't real.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So this is back when YouTube was still a channel where your brother Skippy got on there and said, This is my transformer. And he he turns into a table corner. I still follow him. Yeah. That's what YouTube was. So if we wanted to see a documentary or something, we went on the History Channel. You remember the History Channel? That's where you went to go see your documentary. There was no Netflix. There was Skippy on YouTube.
SPEAKER_01This is my dream. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So there was a documentary on the History Channel, an honest to God, documentary about the Blair Witch, an hour long about the legend and these filmmakers left the lore and these filmmakers went into the woods and they still haven't been found. And oh my God, we can't believe they put this footage out in the in the how controversial is it that this footage is out. We felt like when we I remember buying the ticket thinking, this feels wrong. It's like buying a ticket to watch uh it felt like it was when you were going to see a snuff film. That's what it felt like.
SPEAKER_06I agree.
SPEAKER_03It was odd, and the theater was dead quiet at the end. When everybody wanted to see Faces of Death. Yeah, it's okay. What is wrong with that? And then you found out that it was mostly fake, but then here's a few things, and they really hit a turtle. I you know, I don't need that stuff in my life.
SPEAKER_05Well, I applaud that movie because they made it for like a hundred dollars or something. But yeah, the brilliant was a brilliant idea. And I never did see the second one because I I didn't want to ruin the the lore, the timbre.
SPEAKER_03So the timbre of it, yeah. I I read something about the making of the first one. They gave the actors, as it were, points to go to on a map. And then they just the film crew just fed with them along the whole way, and then they paid the one guy to throw away the map, but didn't tell the rest of them that that was part of the movie. When they're losing their on Mike, I've seen it way too many times for throwing away the map. The actors were genuinely pissed and upset. It was more than just now hold on.
SPEAKER_05Now you said the film crew. Yeah. Now I thought that they really gave one guy the microphone and another person the camera. They did. And three it was it was three people with the camera and and the mic. Yes. And that's what that it was. There wasn't a dish.
SPEAKER_03But there was a crew out there in the woods like following the colour. No, no, no, that they didn't know about.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah. Okay. And that's who every day.
SPEAKER_03So, like hitting the tent with the baby crying sounds.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_03That wasn't in the script. Oh. They literally surprised them with that. Okay. And they lost their and ran. It's good to watch it from the beginning, like as a horror movie. It's fun to watch it again from the it's it changes when like when you realize that stuff about it and go back and watch it again. You're watching people just go out in the woods and get messed with. Yeah. And it's uh whole different movie.
SPEAKER_05It's been so long since I've seen it that it'll feel completely brand new to me.
SPEAKER_03We watched it with the kids. Uh not our best parenting. Of course you did. At last Halloween.
SPEAKER_05It's before or after you let them watch Robocop.
SPEAKER_03They didn't like RoboCop. I couldn't get them to watch Robocop. I watched it up there and they wouldn't watch it with me. But yeah, the Blair Witch was very well received by the kids.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, the backrooms feels like that type of movie. Like the new big thing that's that's gonna hit.
SPEAKER_05And I really hope they don't screw it up. I was thrilled because finally, because I've been bitching for years, give us something new, okay? Give us a new movie. And they did, they gave us a new movie, they didn't reboot something, they didn't give a another sequel, which I mean, and here I am complaining about sequels, and I can't wait until Avengers Doomsday, but that's neither here nor there. Uh-huh. But yes, they gave us something new, uh-huh, and so I'm like, that's what I've been asking for. So thanks, backramps. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_03And I'll I know I talked about it last week, but I'll throw Resident Evil in the mix there. It was it was another I'll say Evil Dead 2. I feel like I got the experience of what people got in the 80s going to see Evil Dead 2 for the first time.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna wrap this up. Uh, we want to thank everybody for listening, and we want you to go to irritable death syndrome.com and uh download every episode and tell all your friends and uh do all those things. And uh but before we go, I wanted to mention do you remember it was a year maybe more ago when we had Craig Augenstein on and he was talking about Vibraflux. Vibraflux. Okay, so the story of Vibraflux, it's one of our greatest episodes, and you'll have to check it out. Just search on irritabledadsyndr.com for Vibraflux, and he talks about this band that his brother was in forever ago. They had all these recordings that were lost, okay. Anyway, they dug through and they found them, and they ended up making the CD that they were gonna make 20 some years ago. So it's a fantastic story, and you need to listen to it. But we had some sad news, and that Bo Bradley, who was the bass player for Viberflux, he passed away a few days ago. He was 59 years old, and I knew him personally. I'd met him several times, and I don't know how many times I'd seen him play music live. But he just had a gift, he had a wonderful singing voice, and he was just an amazing, amazing bass player, heavily inspired by Rush and other prog rock bands. But it was hard to find a nicer guy than Bo.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so to Ernie, Mino, and Eric, the other members of Vibraflux, and to Craig, who was the producer over the album, you know, my apologies go out to you. And so uh after our credits, we're gonna play some music from Vibraflux in tribute to Bo. Awesome. Okay. Alright, but thanks, and we hope to see you next week on Irritable Dad Syndrome.
SPEAKER_03Son of a bitch. You could not tell me what to do while I'm in the middle of the street.
