Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rowan Atkinson dead?
No, despite a false internet rumor circulating online, Rowan Atkinson is alive and well.
What do the hosts think of Metallica at the Sphere?
While they praise the mind-blowing visuals and graphics, they express frustration over the high ticket prices and the 'no-repeat weekend' format that requires fans to purchase multiple expensive shows to see all their favorite songs.
What did Mike think of the new Resident Evil movie?
Mike highly recommends the film, praising its fast-paced 94-minute runtime, great mix of horror and comedy, and fun nods to the original video game franchise.
Oh, real quick, can you check the status of Rowan Atkinson? It'll make sense when we get into the podcast. Rowan Atkinson? Yeah. Check his status. Check the status on Rowan Atkinson, please. He's 71. Is it Atkinson or Atkinson? Atkinson. Atkinson. Atkinson. Rowan Atkinson. Okay, that's all I needed to know.
SPEAKER_05So you wanted me to check the pronunciation of his name. You said status. Like I thought you want to know if he was single, if you had a shot. That's I thought that's what you were you're cruising for some Wrinkly Brit. Anybody can want uh John Oliver. Exactly. I like Rowan Atkinson. Atkinson.
SPEAKER_07I want you to tell me what these fellows look like. Well, the little guy, he was kind of funny looking. In what way? I don't know, just funny looking.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to Irritable Dad Syndrome. In stereo where available, give it up for your hosts, Mike and Darren.
SPEAKER_03Hi, I'm Darren. I am Mike. Welcome to Irritable Dad Syndrome. This is episode 331. And wow, do we have a show for you?
SPEAKER_05I am Golly G Willikus.
SPEAKER_03I am stoked out of my mind. There's a story that I cannot wait to tell, and I really am excited about it.
SPEAKER_05And usually I'm unprepared, but guess what I did, folks? Oh my god. I wrote stuff down. Yeah. I recorded, I scribed, as it were, things that I want to talk about. And as I'm looking at them, this is stuff that just hit my mind randomly. Yeah. Most of them are stupid.
SPEAKER_03That's what this podcast is. All right. Yeah, that's what I do. I just jot down. And sometimes you throw it to the wall, sometimes it sticks. Sometimes it stinks.
SPEAKER_05So I want to throw I want to throw a little teaser. It's what the kids call it, a little teaser out there, a little French tickler. One of the stories I'm going to be talking about is Andrew came to visit us this weekend. That's your son. Yeah, he's away at the OUs. Yeah. And we did a lot of things. And one of the things we did was watch that new Resident Evil movie. Yeah. And boy howdy, I loved it. Oh, good. I want to talk about it a little bit later. Not right now. We got to tease you guys so then you listen to all the banal sh leading up to that.
SPEAKER_03Well, I have what's maybe the greatest Kroger story of the week.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_03Let me change that. Okay. I have what had the potential to be the greatest Kroger story of the week, and then I screwed it up. Oh. But I still think that I salvaged it with a little help from Steve Young.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I reached out to Steve Young and I said, I need some help with this comedy segment that we're doing. And he said, absolutely. First off, I want to talk about the Metallicas.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they're at the sphere.
SPEAKER_03They're at the sphere. They're uh playing um like they're gonna be there like the weekend before we're performing at the sphere. Yeah. Here's the thing I really like Metallica. I do. I like them a lot. I don't know that I'm happy with what they're doing at the sphere.
SPEAKER_05So I have a lot of thoughts on this, and my thoughts have evolved over time.
SPEAKER_03So they're doing a no repeat weekend. Every time that they do a show, they do a Thursday and then they do a Saturday. The Thursday set is 16 songs, the Saturday set is 16 songs, no repeats, completely different set list. Yeah. And I don't think I like that.
SPEAKER_05They've been doing that for a while. And they when the packages went on sale, you would buy packages of two nights together so that you would get all the songs. That was one of the packages. I mean, it wasn't, I mean, that was you had to pay some uh you had to pay some coin as it were to get that.
SPEAKER_03You know, one of your kids can't go to college so that you can see both shows.
SPEAKER_05Like anything in Vegas, it's how far your dollar goes is how far you go. So you could pay like the schlubs and then just go like buy a ticket to a show and go see a show and go home to your stupid little life, and then it's over and you suck. Or you could get the dual pack shows, or you could get the dual pack shows and the super hot uh room at the fanciest hotel, or you could get the Venetian suite, uh the rock and roll suite with the two shows, the merch, the pre-party, um, the special sphere tour, right, uh, and all that stuff, and then you come home to no house.
SPEAKER_03That's yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_05Because those things start at like seven thousand dollars.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I know, and that bothers me that they're doing that. Because one, if you can only afford one show, then you're gonna go to one show, and then I've seen a lot of videos on the TikTok, yeah, and the opening night I think looked a lot cooler than the second night. Yeah, and then the second night had more songs on it that I would want to hear than what they did on the first night.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So if you're there, like from the videos I've seen, if I were in a set that missed Cthulhu, I would be so pissed.
SPEAKER_03If I missed Sad But True, I would be pissed. Okay. And here's the thing they closed night one with Master of Puppets and they closed night two with Inter Sandman. Now, for a while I was kind of tired of Inner Sandman, but once we saw them in Louisville and they closed their show with Inner Sandman, I re uh revived my love for Inner Sandman. I'm sorry, but if I saw Master of Puppets and left, I'm like, they didn't do Inner Sandman? Yeah. Really? Yeah. And then I would be so pissed if they didn't do Master Puppets on the other. If they're gonna do the special package and come see both shows, then do them back-to-back nights. Because now you have to pay for three nights at the hotel.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03My question is what the hell?
SPEAKER_05And it's not like they discount that middle night.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. But the graphics for night one with all the crosses and all the I mean, it was yes, yes, it was insane, right?
SPEAKER_05And then you see there's one shot. I'm sorry, excuse me. No, no, you're f you're fine. There's one, uh, I don't know what song it was, but it nothing was on the screen, and then they hit something, and it made it look like so. You've got your where everybody sits, they made it look like it was a circular arena going way out of the way. You know what I'm talking about? Yeah, and I thought, wow, that I you know, I want to see the Cthulhu that catches the jet and throws it back at the sphere. Yeah, I want to see the lightning, and I want to see that Coliseum looking thing. That was that was all Lars. I know Lars probably fought tooth and nail to they're like, okay, we'll do the casino thing or the Coliseum thing for you.
SPEAKER_03That's now now I know Inner Sandman isn't their best song. There are many Metallica purists who hate that song because the black album was what they say it was when the band sold out. And the band says, Well, yeah, we sold out, we sell out every night. Okay, but um, so let's say let's call it their most popular song. Okay, that's the one that really brought them mainstream, uh, even more popular than one. But the animation for Inner Sandman is like a giant moon. Oh it was just a sphere inside a sphere. Now go on the TikTok and read the comments, and a lot of people are saying this like, really? That's your animation? You're not gonna have the truck coming through. You know, yeah. Yeah. It's like there were so many people that I saw who were disappointed in night two and are saying the same thing that I'm saying. So I was originally bummed that I wasn't going.
SPEAKER_05I'm kind of bummed that I'm not there. I really like what they're doing. There's a weird balance because when the U2s went there, they changed the graphics of a couple of the songs from when me and Bess and the kids went into the time that I went, they changed some of the songs because I guess people were getting vertigo and having issues during the show. Right. But I never felt interesting that they would get vertigo. Yeah. I never felt that they were way overblown or out of control. As a matter of fact, I thought they were showing a lot of restraint. Um, a lot of the songs, they just had like floating images of them out there. Yeah. You know, so you could, if you're in the nosebleeds, you could still see what's going on. And then every once in a while they'd have something that would blow your mind. They have a lot of restraint. Metallica seems to have a lot of stuff that's really like blowing your mind. Like the Cthulhu, nobody is looking at the band when that's happening. Right. Nobody's looking at the band. When it's there's one I saw that had like a twister, everything's green with clouds flying around. I'm not looking at Hetfield when that's happening. I'm up here looking around. It's a weird balance.
SPEAKER_03But that's kind of why people go.
SPEAKER_05It's cool. It is cool. And then you look at some of the videos from The Grateful Dead. I'm sorry, guys, but I mean it's like Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Who Fish?
SPEAKER_05Who did your Walmart did your videography?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Fish did the second residency. Oh, the fish the they did was really cool. Yeah, it was trippy. Okay. Yeah. But now the That's weird. Yeah, the Grateful Dead was just like you're driving through San Francisco, which is where they're from. Yeah. It was just a lot of buildings.
SPEAKER_05It's like a skeleton on a chopper, and he had an American flag on it. And I'm like, okay. Yeah. And I was like, well, it's really this is a 10-minute song, and he's gonna be up there the whole 10 minutes. The chopper? Did Jerry really Jerry Garcia invented ice cream and you're gonna this is what you've got for your graphic?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. God. I know that if I went to the Metallica show, I wouldn't be able to afford two times. So I would be super bummed that I missed songs from one set and visuals from another. And I think that they need to pare it down to one 18-minute set, the best of both worlds, yeah, Van Halen, and then give that to everybody because I can't afford two shows. I don't know how many people out there who can afford to go to Vegas twice. It used to be you could go to a concert and you didn't have to refinance your house.
SPEAKER_05Well, another thing is do they get the same seat for both shows? Because as somebody who has seen multiples of the same show, it's a different experience in the 400 section, the 100 section, and GA. That's three very different concerts. Yes, right. Oh, yeah. The GA, and I'll I'll say I said this, I was on a text thread with uh Fancher and the guys.
SPEAKER_03That's a general audience.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the general audience. You can't be specific when you're that is as close to seeing U2 in a club as I'll ever get. It felt like we were in a like a bar or something down there. There weren't the GA. That's one thing I noticed on the Metallica. They've got the snake pit, they've got all this stuff built out around there, yeah, which U2 didn't have. I there's not a they don't allow a lot of people in the GA in the sphere shows. So I think Metallica got away with putting all that stage stuff out there. They I think they had the same amount of people. I mean, there's a maximum amount of people, all the shows are sold out, all the U2 shows were sold out. So I know there's just as many people down there on these shows now as there were with me at the U2s, but it looks like there's a lot more people at the Metallica because of that. Right. But anyway, when you're down there, it's like you're seeing a club. When you're in the 400 sections, yeah, it's like you're watching TV. I mean, yeah, there's oh, I hear there's a band down there. Yeah. But they uh they compensate for it with like 4D motion on the seats.
SPEAKER_03Well, the Eagles incorporated video of them into like photo frames on the wall.
SPEAKER_05And that's what the U2s did.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's what uh Metallica did some. Yeah. But one other thing, this is a comedy podcast. I don't know why you would go into the snake pit. It's like if you're going to the sphere. When you go to the sphere, you go to see the sphere. Yeah, that's yeah, yes, you love Metallica. Yes, you love U2, and then you know, when Rush comes there, that's the thing, but it's just like you know, you want to see all the visuals, you want to. That's why you're paying a gazillion dollars to go.
SPEAKER_05By the way, I floated when we heard that the rush may go to the sphere, yeah. I kind of floated that out across the living room. Yeah, yeah. And uh Bess's reaction was I'm not going to that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And then I said, I didn't hear you say I'm not going to it. And she's she just kind of smiled. Right. And so I'm I'm taking, I'm just I stopped right there. I got a smile. I'm not hearing a no. I'm not hearing a no. I'm not saying a yes. After what we saw, after what we saw in Detroit, yeah, those graphics up there went perfectly with everything they were doing. Yeah. And they were super, super high resolution, very colorful. Yeah. And oh my God, 2112 with the star and the dude's ass. Yeah. Can you imagine that guy's ass in the sphere? Oh, he's gonna, dude, I guarantee, you know, Rush has a sense of humor. We're getting ass-y tonight. We'll get teabaged. Yeah, because he could get it. It'll be right there. Yeah. Well, they got screens over your head, so you just boom, boom, boom.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Wow, this went off the rails.
SPEAKER_02Good times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. This portion of our show is brought to you by Zern Urinals. Hi, I'm Dave Lay. And when you think of urinals, the brands that come to mind are probably American Standard, Kohler, or Sloan. But let me tell you something right now. I'm so impressed with Zern Urinals. I was at a National Announcers Conference last week, and the hotel where we stayed only had Zern Urinals. After I used one, I was so in awe that I went out and told everybody, hey, you gotta try this. After a while, they asked me to leave, and that's why I'm here now. Don't listen to the haters. Do yourself a favor and try out the Zern Urinals. If the building you're in doesn't have a Zern, just go outside. You'll fake me. Now back to the show.
SPEAKER_03Oftentimes on this show we talk about somebody who has passed away, usually an actor or a musician, famous comedian, that type of thing. And we've paid tribute. The last person, I believe, was Sam Neal. So the other night we were watching a movie and Cameron got a notification on his phone and goes, Oh crap. And we looked and I said, What's what's up, buddy? What's going on? And he said, Roman Atkinson died. And I'm like, What? I'm like, oh no, Mr. Bean. He goes, Yeah. And I said, Oh crap. Now I work for Antana TV, and when things like this happen, usually we do uh little 10 second or five second memoriams on our network. So I went to check to make sure that this was a thing, and uh turns out he was not dead. Oh and as of the recording of this podcast, Rowan Atkinson is not dead. He he is from what I understand, he's totally fine. So I meant to um I meant to say spoiler alert or warn people, but yeah, he's totally fine. Yeah but I wanted to say, you know, we always wait until somebody passes away to talk about how great they are, and we should talk about how great Rowan Atkinson is while he's still alive. And if he's listening to this podcast, dude, you are one of the funniest people who've ever walked the earth. Honest God, Mr. Bean is one of the absolute greatest, probably top five uh comedy characters invented and his use of physical humor, and he does this bit as uh Rowan Agison when he was doing his stand-up routine where he's uh playing invisible drums to a recorded track and insane, absolutely insane. You've got to watch that. But I'm so happy that he's still alive.
SPEAKER_05I actually watched a clip of Rowan doing a uh interview with somebody, uh-huh. And the guy had a strange name, uh-huh, and he just would not stop asking questions about the name pronunciation. Yeah. And it kept going and going. And it was one of those, it was kind of like a Norm McDonald thing where he just was driving it so far in the ground. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03And he was like, And the more uncomfortable it gets.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and he was like, You you really, you really don't mind having that name. Really? And the guy's like, no, I I don't. He's like, You're serious now. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well what makes him even cooler was, you know, a few years ago when there was the royal wedding, and we look in the crowd, and there's at the time Prince Charles, and he was sitting there, and people were like, Is he is that Mr. Bean? And now King Charles, yeah, and it turns out they're best friends. Oh yeah. Mr. Bean is best friends with King Charles of England. Rowan Ackison, I'm so happy that at the time of this podcast, you are still alive.
SPEAKER_05Andrew came in to visit this weekend. How's he doing? He's doing awesome. So I was tasked with picking him up. Actually, I offered to pick him up because uh we had to pick him up from the bus station in Cincinnati at nine o'clock, and this was on a Thursday. I had to work the next day. And I'm like, well, if if you go pick him up, then you'll be home, it'll be like after 10 before you're home, you know, by the time you find him and all that stuff, and I'll probably already be in bed. So why don't I go so I can at least see him? Uh and then you know, all that. So I go down there and I cannot find where the bus stop is because it's in a weird spot. It's like on the other side of a FedEx, and it makes no sense. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Uh so we could always, when I worked downtown at Channel 5, we could see the bus stop from our building, and it's kind of near the casino.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I ended up on the other side of the street, a pretty busy street. And I saw Andrew and I rolled down the window and I yelled out, Andrew, you know, loud. And him and everybody else looked over. Uh-huh. And then he waved, and I got out and I start waving them over. And Andrew yelled across the street. I think you're supposed to park on this side. And I said, I can't. Look how busy it is. Why don't you guys run across? Uh-huh. And then as soon as I said that, I realized it's him and his two friends, uh-huh, and they had luggage. And I'm yelling, I'm telling them to run across a busy street. The nearest crosswalk was nowhere near us. Uh-huh. He looked and he said, Are you serious? He yelled that across. Now other people are starting to look. And his friend, uh, I think it was friend Nico, said, There's cars. And I said, Well, dodge the cars. Go around them. Haven't you seen Frogger? Like, look, right after this car, he saw it and he let it pass, and another car passed. I was like, dude, you had your chance. And the other, the other, they were looking at each other like I can only imagine what was going through Andrew's mind. Like, dad's finally lost it, and he's he's trying to get us all killed.
SPEAKER_03He knew I shouldn't have moved away.
SPEAKER_05Eventually, they made it mostly unscathed. Mostly uh one car came close, but everyone was fine. We got in the car.
SPEAKER_03I think they were overreacting at best. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05A little bit. We had so much fun with him here. We went out to the movies. Well, first thing is we went to the Top Golf, as it were. Okay. For that, because it was their birthday weekend, right? Uh the kids. They're now Andrew is now 19 and Charles is 13. Oh my God. We have two teenagers. Oh my lord. So we went to Top Golf. Now I'm going to tell you something. I don't know if I've ever told you before, but I was on the golf team in high school.
SPEAKER_03You never told me that. No, because I suck.
SPEAKER_05But I do know how to swing. Golf is weird in that you can know how to do it and not be able to do it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_05I was actually coaching Charlie and Andrew. Well, Andrew, not so much, because I was just I was taking the stance of if someone asks me for help, I will help. Yeah. But I'm not going to see something and try to help somebody that doesn't want to be able to do it.
SPEAKER_03You need to hold your legs closer together.
SPEAKER_05Because that's the fastest way to screw up a whole family outing, right?
SPEAKER_03Just bend your hip.
SPEAKER_05Nobody wants that sent back there. No, no. So but you gotta follow through. Yeah, Charlie kept asking me, and Bess asked for a couple things. Andrew said, screw you, I'm doing it my way. And I ended up losing. And Bess won. Bess beat the d out of all of us.
SPEAKER_03A top golf. That's not like putt-putt. That's the thing.
SPEAKER_05No, there's actual clubs, and you swing and it goes out into the out into the thing and a little video game aspect to it. And you were on the golf team? I was on the golf team. Team. Team. Oh. A group of individuals playing a particular sport.
SPEAKER_03What was the name of your team?
SPEAKER_05The golf team.
SPEAKER_03The swingers.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the s yuck yes. We were the dragons. We were. That was our mascot. We were the dragons.
SPEAKER_03So intimidating. Yeah. Well, I'm going to tell you something I've never told you. In college, I took a golf class. Did you? Yeah, one of my uh PE requirements in college at East Tennessee State University, and they taught you how to uh stand, how to hold, you know, get your pinky over your uh your ring finger there, and then you know, you uh you bend your right elbow and keep your left one straight, and then you follow through. Keep your head down, never move your head, yeah. Yeah, and then you sort of follow through or whatever. I never could hit the ball. Honest to God, I tried and tried and tried, and every time I would swing, it would I would completely miss the ball. Now, I have a lazy eye, I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, but I mean I watched the guy next to me, the girl on the other side of me, they hit that one, hit that one, hit that one, hit that one, and I nothing, nothing. And I I knew learned the uh the definition between uh slice and a um uh a hook. A hook. Hook goes to the left, slice goes to the right. Yeah, yeah. And our professor's name, our golf instructor was Fred, and he had a bumper sticker, Freds don't let Freds drive drunk. Okay. So and he's okay. And by the way, if you happen to find any Fred, uh interesting Fred shirts or whatever, let me know and I'd like to see those. So yeah, so it was a great waste of time for me. And I just walked out of that class thinking. I had no desire to play golf ever. No.
SPEAKER_05I'm more of a bowler. I made the mistake. My first actual real job, I was on a golf outing, and I made the mistake of telling them, I don't know why I did this, and I will never do it again, that I was on the golf team in high school. And they're like, well, you're going first. And I swung at the ball and it went backwards. I'm not kidding. And it almost went to the rafters? Yeah, it almost, well, it we were out on the tee and it almost hit one of the sales guys. Uh-huh. It went downhill from there. It was terrible.
SPEAKER_03I've been to several parties at top golf. And every time they're like, Yeah, Darren, get a club. I'm like, yeah, no.
SPEAKER_05I can that's the thing, is every once in a while I can knock the piss out of it. Yeah. And when I was showing the kids, it's weird. I know when you hit it right, everything just feels right and it feels effortless. You think you missed it, and you just see a ball flying out there, and like, wow, I'm gonna do that next time. And the next time you hit the ground full force and knock your elbow out. And it's just it does, it doesn't work.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, but the other thing we did this weekend is we went to go see the new Resident Evil movie. You're like, Mike, where did that come from? Why did you go see that?
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, Andrew, when he came in, he asked if I wanted to see Primetime. And I said, Yes, I want to see Primetime.
SPEAKER_03I would like to see that as well. And then I hear it's hilarious.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. We have a family chat group. I don't know how Resident Evil came up. Somehow that came up. He's like, I could probably see that too, but I'd rather see Primetime. I was like, okay. So I put both trailers in the family chat and uh and positive this. And then Bess came back a few hours later and said, I don't think Primetime looks that appropriate. Right. My whole family. So let's take the kids. Let's go see Resident Evil. Now, here's the thing there's more trailers now, but the trailers that we had seen or I had seen up that point showed all the like dark, scary parts. Uh-huh. So I remember, uh, especially because it just happened this past weekend, as we were driving, I'm like, Charlie, if it gets too rough, you know, we can we don't have to stay for the movie. You know, I feel bad. This seems like a bad movie to take another adult to, much less your kid, right? But we went in there, one of the most fun movies I've ever seen. Really? Highly, highly, I can't more highly recommend it. It's at 96% on the Rotten Tomatoes, on the critical, and the audience score is like 94%.
SPEAKER_03People aren't crazy about going to the movies.
SPEAKER_05It's nine, it's 94 minutes long.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and that's a selling point.
SPEAKER_05Well, about 10 minutes into it, I started thinking, man, this needs to be longer than nine. I'm having a great time. Uh-huh. This needs to be a lot longer. It's exactly the length it needs to be.
SPEAKER_07That's what she said.
SPEAKER_05It's thick.
SPEAKER_03It's thick. It's not the length of the movie, Mike. Yeah. It's how you use it.
SPEAKER_05It's it's thick with content. It's long as it needs to be. Uh-huh. And it moves. And it leaves you wanting more.
SPEAKER_03It does.
SPEAKER_05Hello. It moves you in and out of horror and comedy all the way through. I can't say I can't say more good things about this movie. And me and Charlie.
SPEAKER_03It sounds like you were on top of things when you were in the world.
SPEAKER_05We were. We got into a rhythm of your the anticipation, right? Uh-huh. And then the just the release when it's to be the scary.
SPEAKER_03I was about to see what was the climax of the movie.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02It's just gonna be one of the best. Yeah, yeah. So I'm so glad I came over here tonight.
SPEAKER_05I will say this. Can you watch it alone? Yes. Well, yeah, but it's better with others. Okay. Right?
SPEAKER_03That's right.
SPEAKER_05You'll get the story. You'll have a few giggles, but it's when you have others around you that you really get the full effect of this movie. Right. Now I want to be serious.
SPEAKER_03After the movie, you go and smoke a cigarette.
SPEAKER_05That's right. I think it was like minute three or four in. I was like, oh, it's gonna be this kind of movie. I never saw Evil Dead 2. You know, you're familiar with it. Oh, yeah. I never saw that in the theater. Uh-huh. I have to imagine this experience of seeing Resident Evil in the theater is what people felt when they saw Evil Dead 2 and didn't really know what to expect. Right. There was one jump scare in particular, and I'm not going to spoil anything. Okay. And Charlie and I, because Charlie was sitting right next to me, screamed. I've never screamed in a horror movie until this past weekend. I have. We screamed at the top of our lungs, like an actual, not, oh, I'm going to scream and scare everybody. Like we were terrified. He kicked his legs up. I kicked my legs up. And then we both just died laughing, as everybody else died laughing at the next scene. It was so, so fun. The lead actor, I don't know his name. So it's by the same guy.
SPEAKER_03Jeremy Piven.
SPEAKER_05Uh it's the is no.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry. Well, it could have been.
SPEAKER_05It's Pierce Bronsner.
SPEAKER_03Pierce Bronson.
SPEAKER_05John Larrick. Marky Post. John Ritter. It's by the same guy that did uh Barbarian and Weapons. And you kind of get that same feel. You don't have to know anything about the video game to enjoy it, but if you do, if you have played the Resident Evil games, there's tons of little nods and Easter eggs. And one of the running gags in the movie is everything has a padlock, and he has to shoot the padlocks. And it's like he cut he comes up on another padlock. He's like, Really? What's with the f yeah? It's just it's it fit.
SPEAKER_02Hey, what happened?
SPEAKER_05A bunch of little things like that. In you know, little nods in the game. You you eat plants, you like there's little green plants that heal you. There's a part where he's walking by and he sees a green plant and it focuses for a second. The only complaint that I have, and this is very, very, very slight complaint, is there's a lot going on in the movie. And there's a lot of instances where he has to either go that way or go that way, or do this or do that. It's the old Indiana Jones thing of where the door is closing and he's got to jump across the pit. Make sure you get that and whatever. And it's like, well, the rate at which that door is closing, there's no way you don't have time to do all this because you have to look down in the pit, you see the whip, all this. So there's a few of those where something's coming at him across the room. And am I gonna do this? Am I gonna do that? Well, if I do this, this happens, that's that dude. You're already dead at that point.
SPEAKER_03It's a it's essentially the clock counting down 10 seconds, nine seconds, eight seconds. Then you go to a close-up and he's like, what the hell's gonna happen? Oh my god, am I gonna die? I need to tell Teresa that I love her in eight seconds. Wait, wait.
SPEAKER_05When it does that, it is hilarious and also terrifying. It it does a really good mix of scaring the d out of you uh and then just making you cackle. Bess, she was laughing so hard during the uh the climax, as it were, of the movie.
SPEAKER_03We all were that's not where you want her to laugh.
SPEAKER_05But uh I really I really want you to see it because I want to talk to you about it afterwards. There's there's certain things in there that I know that you're gonna giggle your ass off at.
SPEAKER_03Well, the backrooms is on HBO now, and Cameron's been wanting me to watch that. So I'm gonna watch that with him. And if I watch Resident Evil as well, we can talk about both of them. Yeah, yeah. So yeah.
SPEAKER_05Whilst we were watching the movie, some people came in, some teenagers and or people in their 20s, as it were. Here we go. And started being loud as up in the front rows.
SPEAKER_03Stop it. Just stop it.
SPEAKER_05And F this and you know, shut up, MF or this, that, and the other. Some gentleman, two or three rows behind us, offered the advice why don't you all shut the f up? Very loudly. Oh. And then the people in the front row uh responded with you. Another guy in the back to the other side said, No, you and it went back and forth. Eventually, some people went out, and then we saw security come in. Uh-huh. And I thought, okay, security is going to escort them out. They didn't. They just talked to him for like 10 or 15 seconds, and then security left, and then they started up again. And then security came back, calmed them down, and then they were quiet the rest of the movie.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05We don't know why they didn't take them out, and it was during a major part of the movie. Yeah. There's about a four or five-minute part of the movie I completely missed. Yeah. And it sucks because it was a really cool part.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Okay, so when I went to see Jurassic World, the first one with Christopher Pratt, yeah. I had already seen it before, and I was down uh in Johnson City, and mom wanted to go see it. And we're sitting there, and uh, the teenagers in the front row, yeah, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, I'm wearing corduroy pants. What? You know, stupid. Just and it's like, shut up. So I knew when there was a lull. I'm wearing corduroy. Yeah, that was like of all the things to talk about. Yeah. So I knew where there was a lull, and I went out, and I normally don't do this because I'm always concerned that when you say something to people like that, they're gonna start something, and then it's either gonna happen during the movie or it may happen on the walk to the car. Yeah, you know. So anyway, I was done, done, and I went out and I said, Look, we're trying to watch Jurassic World, and these knuckleheads won't shut up. And the dude at the popcorn thing says, Yeah, you're not the first person to complain. Hang on. And so I went back in and he was cool. I went back and I sat down and he waited like five or six minutes, and he goes, You guys, out. And they're like, What? Out, and they're like, but we out three times, and he took them out. Yeah, right. And so we're like, wow. And like 10-15 minutes later, they were allowed back in and they didn't make a peep. They didn't say they didn't say a thing, but still, you know, mom and I just kind of hung around and waited for all the credits to roll and stuff before we left. I don't think anybody saw me go. Again, I don't want because you never know what type of trouble you're gonna get into when uh or what type of trouble people are gonna try and start with you. So yeah, yeah. Last week or a week before, we were talking about the Knack and that the bass player is the only member of the Knack. And I was talking to a friend at work, and I said, Wouldn't it be funny if the bass player from the Knack was the only person who went on tour? And all you heard was the bass part to like every song and I went on YouTube and you can find just the bass part.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I'm listening to that, and I found out that that lines up perfectly with Fred Willard saying that.
SPEAKER_05Hey, what happened? I I do have something to say now that we're talking about bands. Before we get off bands, okay. Uh, I was on the Spotifies uh listening to different musics. If you play something and it gets to the end of the album or the EP or whatever it is you're playing, it'll start playing things that it thinks you'll like that are in the same genre. And it brought up the stones. And I thought this is a good this is a good stone. I love the stones too. And I'm digging it, I'm like, wow, man, I wish they were still making albums. And I looked it up, and it's an album from just a uh this year. They're in their 80s, yeah. And they sound like they're in their 30s. Yeah. And I thought, there's no way.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05There's no so I looked it up and it has pictures from the recording. I swear to you, if you told me these pictures were from the 90s, I would believe you.
SPEAKER_03I know. It's baffling. The stones have uh drunk. They have drunk from the fountain of youth.
SPEAKER_05They've drunk some from from some fountains.
SPEAKER_03They've dove though. Oh, oh, have they?
SPEAKER_05Even the jokes about Keith Richards being old are old. One of our uh listeners and and friends posted the picture of Keith Richards holding two babies, yeah, holding Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve, yeah. And I mean, it's ridiculous. Yeah. When Bess and I saw them in 2015, 11 years ago, we both said, we've got to see them before they die. Yeah. And we were making little jokes. Uh, I hope they, I hope they make it while we, you know, it's an hour and a half drive for us to get to Columbus. I hope they make it, you know. Yeah. And it's now 11 years since. Yeah. And they're still putting out and this album, I don't know if you've heard the new album, it's got some hardcore banging. They're not just around. No. They're not David Gilmore in it out like no, they're jammed.
SPEAKER_03The new Gilmore album is he's badass. He it is, but it's perfect if you're wanting to just, you know, zone out. Yeah. If you're wanting to let's say you want to partake in something, yeah, uh like uh fans of Pink Floyd did, Tour of the Day.
SPEAKER_05And well, Roger Waters has been frisky lately.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we saw him getting frisky. Well, I saw the Stones in '87 on the Steel Wheels tour, and I said the same thing. You said I need to see them before they stop because uh at the time they had been uh they were almost at 30 years. I remember when a band was around for 30 years, that was like a long time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know, I think it was Tom Brokow who made the point that, you know, uh, you know, Bruce Springsteen's performing now at 75 years old. 70 years ago, you know, you didn't see like the the guys from the 20s uh still performing in the 90s. Right. You know, they didn't.
SPEAKER_07This is Steve Young, the comedy guy, not the football guy. And you are listening to Irritable Dad Syndrome. Am I the football guy? No, I feel like I would remember that.
SPEAKER_01It's time now for the Kroger story of the week.
SPEAKER_03Alright, I've been stoked out of my mind to talk about this story. I was at Kroger. Now I go to Kroger at least a couple times a week, and one of the features on this show is the Kroger story of the week. So I feel like I am obligated. Whenever I walk into Kroger, as soon as I step foot in the parking lot, I need to find a Kroger story of the week. And uh here lately they're hit and miss. So there's been a lot of weeks where I go in there and I don't see nothing. And I'm like, well, and I'm disappointed. Yeah. And when I go home, the first thing Libby and Cameron ask me, Did you get a story of the week? I did not. Well, this week, I could have.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I could have found one, but I didn't. And this is why I feel like I've failed you. I have failed you, Mike, and I apologize. I've failed Libby and Cameron, and I've failed Bess. I have failed all of our patrons, and I have failed all the listeners of this podcast. Okay. Yeah. So I'm in Kroger and I'm walking around and nothing's going on, and I'm walking out the store. Okay. I'm walking, I'm actually walking to uh uh check out my groceries, and as I'm going into register 16, a man walks past me and he has on his shoulder a parrot. Not a not a puppet, not a fake parrot, a honest to God parrot.
SPEAKER_05Was it a C and I parrot?
SPEAKER_03Well, that's a good that's a good question. It was a parrot. Yeah. And what did I do? I went, huh. I didn't approach him.
SPEAKER_05You didn't ask it if it wanted a cracker. No, I didn't. Okay.
SPEAKER_03You need to stop.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03You need to stop. Because I've got a list of questions. If you listen to rundown, you'd see I'm trying to get I'm trying to get there. I'm getting it. I'm trying to get there. So he walks past, and I just, huh? And I'm like, that's did did anybody see that? Right? And no one was paying attention to him. And I should have went and found the guy and talked to him about his parrot, but they started ringing up my food. And then all my food is in the bag, and I've got some cold stuff. And so I feel like I should take it to the car. And all the time I'm torn. Like I'm putting the groceries in the car. I'm like, I should go back and talk to the guy about a parrot. Because it's not every day you see a person with a parrot on his shoulder. No, no. And I'm kicking myself. And this is when I'm like, well, I've since I've failed everybody, what I need to do is save this segment. And my writers have written a top 10 list, a top 10 things I should have asked the guy who had a parrot on his shoulder. Okay. Right. And so I reached out to Steve Young, former writer for David Letterman. I said, I need some help with this. Would you like to contribute to this list? And he said, Absolutely. So I'm going to read the top 10 things I should have asked the guy who had a parrot on his shoulder. The funny ones were written by Steve Young. The ones that are okay were written by me. Here we go.
unknownNumber 10.
SPEAKER_03Is that an emotional support parrot? That's kind of like your seeing eye parrot. Seeing eye parrot, I think, had a better ring to it. Thank you.
unknownNumber nine.
SPEAKER_03Are you the guy I saw in here last week with a penguin? Okay. Number eight. Did you teach your parrot to recite your grocery list? Uh-huh. I think that's a pretty good one. Number seven. Does your parrot want a cracker? Or does your parrot want a gluten-free cracker? Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Number six. Oh, it's a parrot. I thought I heard somebody say you had a ferret. Okay. These are top ten things I should have asked the guy. Yeah. Okay.
unknownNumber five.
SPEAKER_03On average, how many people per day look at you and say, our baby? Yeah. Because the pirate. Because pirates have parrots. Number four. Does your parrot know about toucan Sam from Fruit Loop? From Fruit Loop. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Number three. You do realize, I hope, that the 10% discount day for parrot owners is Tuesday and not Thursday. Yeah, that's good. Number two! Would your parrot like to touch my beats? Oh, okay. That was from you. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. Number one. The number one thing. You wouldn't know anything about a big splat of parrot on all five, would you? So I went home and I told Libby there was a guy at the store with a parrot on his shoulder, and she says, No, there wasn't. I said, Yes, there was.
SPEAKER_05Did you get you didn't get a picture?
SPEAKER_03I didn't get a picture. Okay. I should have done that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because it's not every day you see that. Have you um again it had potential, so much potential, and I failed.
SPEAKER_01This has been the Kroger story of the week.
SPEAKER_05Have you seen the TikToks of the parrot that tells Alexa to play music in the middle of the night with the family and then dances in the hallway?
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's hilarious. I have not seen that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he Alexa! And it pops up and he's like, play music! And starts going, and it just starts bopping its head.
SPEAKER_03You know what I might be saying?
SPEAKER_05And then the lady yells out, I forget what his name is, Max or whatever. Max! Alexa! Off! And then Max just like waddles back into his room, then comes back out, Alexa! Play music! Oh, it's so great.
SPEAKER_03There was a comedian on Bob and Tom, and I think I may butcher this joke, but he told this great joke about there was a magician on a cruise ship, and one of the passengers had a parrot, and the parrot would not stop ruining the act. The guy would try to do the check, cards under his hat, it's under the seat, brrrr. You know, every time he tries to do a trick, the parrot would give away the act, right? So the cruise ship hits an iceberg and uh sinks, and almost everybody's dead except for the magician and the parrot, and like three days they just sit in the water floating on uh a door or something, and finally the parrot said, I give up. Where's the boat? Again, I ruined the joke. I thought it was good. Thank you. I enjoyed it. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01This portion of our show is brought to you by Womper's All Be Footlong Hot Dogs. Hi, I'm Dave Lay, and I have some amazing news. SPEAKER_05I want to get this in before we stop.
SPEAKER_07That's what she said.
SPEAKER_05Um have you How old is Jacob?
SPEAKER_0322.
SPEAKER_0522, and then Cameron is 18?
SPEAKER_03He's 18.
SPEAKER_05So, yeah, Andrew is 19 and Charlie is 13.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna tell you my experience, and then you tell me how you relate to this. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I used to have a stern voice. You did. That I could pull out when needed. Okay. Right? Uh-huh. Your mom said, eat all your rice. Right. Eat your rice.
SPEAKER_03I love how you throw her under the belt.
SPEAKER_05Well, she has to do the, she has to start the disciplinary action, and then I and you're like, hey, that hey, hey, come in, listen to it. I tag on.
SPEAKER_03Kids, listen to your mom. I'm like mom. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You remember the Looney Tunes, like the big bulldog that comes in, he's got the little yapper guy right next to him. Yeah. I'm the I'm that guy, right? Your mom said to, but I have the stern voice that means dad's not messing around, right? After this, yeah, we start taking away uh PlayStations, phones, limbs, whatever needs to happen, happens. And I've noticed as As the kids get older, the stern voice has less of an effect to the point where I don't think I've used it in at least a year. Uh-huh. And you've given up. I've had some opportunities to use it. I've just been like, you've given up. I don't know that that's appropriate now because A, that one's an adult. And this one over here, I mean, it just doesn't seem uh so I'm asking you, do you still have a stern voice? He's like, hey, I think you need to clear your plate. Is it still there?
SPEAKER_03Uh not really. Yeah, so yeah. Because that's after years of the kids just not listening. We've been neutered. We have our powers have been stripped away.
SPEAKER_05There is a very real possibility now that you say clear your plate, and then the response is and now at that point.
SPEAKER_03Well no, that will not happen. That will never happen in my house.
SPEAKER_05But it could.
SPEAKER_03Not in my house.
SPEAKER_05But it could.
SPEAKER_03And I think they're not scared of me. I just say that they'd be scared of their mom if they said that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And I don't think it would happen in our house. I probably shouldn't have said that. My point is, it has no plate. Like, I feel like if I use the stern voice now, not only would we all stop and look at each other, I would probably be the first one to just laugh.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I think my stern voice days are over. The next time I'm going to be around a kid that I could use the stern voice on, like if it's a grandkid, it's not my place to use the stern voice. Right. And I'll be the one that here's five dollars, go get a thing, you know. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to be uh pop pop or whatever.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. I I plan on being pop pop. I'm going to be pop-pop. I totally plan on being pop pop. Yeah. Yeah. But no, I will say though, I still have the look. I can shoot the look across the table. I'm like, mom asked you to do this, or I asked you to do that. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Hey, what happened? Halloween's coming up.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we're going to dress up too.
SPEAKER_03Did you uh have you started watching judging the Frank Film competition movies? When do those do? I don't know. Yeah. But I started watching them, and I will say, uh, so Jim Timmerman is I love doing that. Jim Timmerman's a fan of our podcast. Yeah. He's a good friend of mine. I used to be uh his employee, and I actually and now I'm uh in debt to him because he loaned me a book. Oh he came by the house the other day, we had coffee, he loaned me a book about Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg, about their rise. It's the last kings of Hollywood. And he and I both agree that there's a problem with the cover of the book because the names of the directors are not underneath the the actual directors. Like Coppola's name is under Spielberg, Lucas's name is under Coppola, and Silver's name is under George. And it's like, come on, come on, guys. Take a different picture, move the names around, figure it out.
SPEAKER_05Art department had an intern that way. Right.
SPEAKER_03So, but yeah, uh, you were asking me, I don't have a costume picked out. I haven't worn a costume since I think you and I went to the Durbin's Halloween party.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And that was fun. I went as Charlie Brown that night. Some of my most famous costumes. There's one year I went as Charlie Brown's ghost. So I had a bed sheet, a white sheet where I cut a hundred holes out of it. Yeah. And I walked around with a bag of rocks. Okay. Easy. Yeah. Easy. Yeah. Such an easy costume. And I'm at this party at a hotel and I'm walking through the room, and somebody grabbed my ass so hard like I owed him money. And I turned around and I said, Thank you. And this guy, oh, this guy says, Oh, sorry. You see this lifeless mass walking around in this sheet, and you're like, Oh, I gotta have some of that. Yeah. Yunk. One year I decided uh I went crazy and I decided I was gonna go as Capital T. I was gonna go as a as a giant capital T. And I called my friend Chad, and now Chad goes to Comic Con, not Comic Con, uh, whatever con it is in Atlanta. Yeah. Every year. He's gone for I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Peach Con.
SPEAKER_03Yes, he goes to Peach Con. He goes to whatever con it is in Atlanta, and he will start like in November and by October of the following year have his costume ready. He is insane at the costumes that he builds from the ground up. The most intricate, amazing. I'll have to send you some pictures of it one day. So I called him up and I said, I'm gonna go with Capital T. And he says, Dagwood, that's hilarious. That's absolutely hilarious. So I made a giant capital T out of these boxes, and I got in it, got my arms, and I'm walking around and I'm a giant capital T. Yeah. And nobody got it. Nobody. Some of the questions were, What are you, box man? Okay, uh, what is that? Why are you wearing what is that? And then and then when I told somebody that I'm capital T, they said, Well, what does T stand for? And I said, I I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Terminator, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Tinkle Bell.
SPEAKER_04Try again. That's what it does.
SPEAKER_03That's what it sounds like. And one year I went as I took a plastic garbage can and I cut the bottom out of it so I could stand in it, and then I put a strap where I could wear it over my shoulder, and I filled it with recyclables, and I was white trash. And I wore that to a party, and some redneck guy says, You got a lot of damn nerve wearing that in here. He he was offended because he thought I was making fun of him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Which in a way you were.
SPEAKER_03Well, I was just it was just white trash. I'm white. Yeah. That's trash.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Come on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So this show that you're listening to right now used to air on public access cable in Dayton, Ohio. Yeah. We did it for like eight weeks, and it just got to the point where it's a lot of work. It was a lot of work. We couldn't air it with any language in it. Yeah. So we had to not only edit the audio part, and it had to be exactly 60 minutes long. Yeah. And it just it just became too much, so we stopped doing that. Anyway the cable access channel does something every year called the Halloween Spectacular. Now, I have been on the Halloween spectacular every year, except for one for I think 17 or 18 years in a row. And if you want to watch that, you can go to vod.mvcc.video. Yeah, Miami Valley cable access. Public access intelligence. There's one more thing I want to mention before we leave, and we need to go because this is getting sad. Um we've got the brand new car, right? We've got the Mazda. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And one of the cool the Mazda. The Mazda CX50. Yeah. Fitty. One of the cool things is, you know, when you walk up to it, you don't have to beep beep with your uh thing. Yeah. You just slide, you just put your hand in there. Yeah. You put your hand in it and it opens up for you. Hello.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then so you put your hand in there and your car automatically unlocks because it says you have the keys. Yeah. So when you're leaving your car, you lock it and close the door. When you go to check it, it automatically unlocks. So you lock it, close it, go to check it, it opens up.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03You could be there all day.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So my fancy new space car, your George Jetson mobile, doesn't automatically lock. And I don't understand. I'm sure there's some setting that I have clicked the wrong way because the Kia automatically locked.
SPEAKER_03It automatically locked when you closed it?
SPEAKER_05If I closed it and didn't have the fob near it, it would lock everything up. So where if I came back out and I didn't have the keys with me, and I know this because of all the cussing, I would leave something in there and have to run back out and it would be locked. I have to go back and get the keys. Right. And Bess's car does the same thing, but my car, I lock it from my phone every night, which is nice. I can just like click locky, lucky lock.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I don't know why it just doesn't automatically lock. It's probably in the settings. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, this nosedive into a bowl of It did not. No, it didn't. It did not. No. It had a good time. It was a good time. I did not know Resident Evil was going to go the erection that it did. Right. No.
SPEAKER_03I had no idea that Steve Young would actually contribute to our top 10 list. So I want to thank him again for his help. And again, when you listen to it, send us an email and tell us which items on that list you thought were written by him and which items you thought were written by our writers. Maybe. We want you to go to irritable dad syndrome.com, uh, download every episode that we have, tell all your friends, and if you want to become a patron, do that and you can help us keep the lights on and you'll get cool stuff. Yeah. Yeah. So uh yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. See ya. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03See ya.
SPEAKER_01We hope to see you next week on Irritable Dad Center. Irritable Dad Syndrome is a Mike Odal Darren Cox production.
SPEAKER_05Wait, wait, wait, wait. Should I tell people wrong?
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, that'll be great.
SPEAKER_05It never seems to matter, but.
