We've turned all that off and we turned all this on.
SPEAKER_05Hey everybody.
SPEAKER_03David Litterman. All right, we're about to go live. Everyone on their A game. Good energy.
SPEAKER_02Time now for Irritable Dad Syndrome. It won't get any better if you don't stop scratching it. Here are your hosts, Mike and Darren. Hi, I'm Darren. I am Mike.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to Irritable Dad Syndrome. This is episode 333. And let me 333. Let me ask you, you people, uh, our listeners, our viewers, are you interested in becoming a member of the podcast community? Do you love podcasts so much you're like, God, I want to work on a podcast? Well, today's your lucky day. Oh, we're hiring. Oh. This morning, I completely let go every person in our marketing department. And we need to hire people who can uh if you have skills in let's say Adobe Photoshop, that'd be a plus. Uh-huh. Word. Yes. Uh, if you know chat GPT, that would be perfect because this morning our episode released. Okay. And on that particular episode, just like every episode, there's a description of what is it's a synopsis, okay? Easy to do, very easy to do. My name.
SPEAKER_04You know, I talked to him about it.
SPEAKER_03My name was misspelled twice. Yeah. My question is, what the hell? And now I know I didn't develop this podcast. I know I didn't come up with the name of the podcast, but I have been a co-host of the podcast since the day one. Okay. I am the head writer, I am the chief editor, okay, and I am the producer of said podcast. And the fact that we can't find somebody who can proofread the synopsis, I I find that unacceptable. So we are hiring somebody who knows how to proofread something before it goes lost.
SPEAKER_04Let's lower it, let's, let's, let's, let's get a lower. Let's lower the drop it down a couple of notches here. Now, back around episode 120, 121, I went into the writer's room. Okay. And I'm like, And they've asked you not to do that. I just said, hey, can you stop misspelling his name? Because when you do that, he's gonna rant about it on the next episode. Yeah. And it's just gonna be a thing, and it's you're just fueling the fire. Yes. I was like, some of our writers are huge fans of pissing you off.
SPEAKER_03I know.
SPEAKER_04They think it's funny.
SPEAKER_03They think it's a stupid thing.
SPEAKER_04They think it's funny, and I'm like, it's it's not funny anymore. What are we doing? They are biting the hand that feeds it. So I put a posting, I put a poster with your name spelled correctly on the wall.
SPEAKER_03In the break room? No. In the writer's bathroom.
SPEAKER_04We keep the break room completely and totally clear. Uh-huh. We don't even have lights in there. But in the writer's room, there's a poster.
SPEAKER_03That is kind of depressing, really.
SPEAKER_04I don't want them in there. They should be working. We we have your name spelled. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03D, A, R, I, N.
SPEAKER_04You know, there's auto-correct and there's auto stuff and auto this and auto that. Unacceptable. I know. I told him. Unacceptable. I told him. So, yeah. So we fired everybody. So on the plus side, jobs are available. On the negative side, we didn't have anybody to write for this episode.
SPEAKER_03So um just I don't know what to do. I really don't know what to do. We're at episode 333, and my name, it's like they never spell your name M Y K-E.
SPEAKER_04No. No, they don't. You know what they could do.
SPEAKER_03Don't tell me to change my name.
SPEAKER_04No. Okay. You can still be Darren. I'm just saying change the spelling of.
SPEAKER_03I'm not changing my spelling. I'm not doing it. It's my name.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's my name. D-A-R-I-N.
SPEAKER_04I tried. I told I told Bob that I would put my neck on the line for him. Uh-huh. He has a family. Well. He can't find another job. And he said, please just do this for me.
SPEAKER_03Well, B-A-H-B is going to be looking for work starting now.
SPEAKER_04You know, I never liked him anyway. He kept putting candles in the break room. He's trying to skirt the rules. He's always skirting the rules. Well, now he's not. Now he's not. Now he's out on his ass.
SPEAKER_03Well, this week I I went to Chick-fil-A. Yeah. Okay. And when my receipt came, they spelled my name D-A-R-I-E-N. Yeah. Darien. Darien. I like that. And and the comments were like somebody on Game of Thrones. Or I'm Darien of the Hill people. Right? Or something Gaelic. Or and I'm like, I've just never seen it, D-A-R-I-E-N. Yeah. Darien. So Chick-fil-A outdid themselves. And then I went to uh the other place I went Covers. After church, mom and I and Cameron and Libby, we went to Culver's and they spelled my name D-A-R-I-N-E. And the guy came to our table and he said, Daren? I'm like, oh for fuck's sake. Yeah. How it's my name. That was expensive.
SPEAKER_04I paid him, I paid him to do that.
SPEAKER_03It's two syllables.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03My name isn't Thaddeus. It's Darren. Darren. But I get Darek, Daryl, Dwayne, Damon, Damien, Darfin, Dan, Darine, Darien. I think it's just stick with Darion. Dan, I get uh Darfin? Darfin Darfin was the best. But it's like, you know, when I get it at Culver's, when I get it at Chick-fil-A, that's funny, and I'll just make jokes about it on my Facebook page on this. But when it's in my own podcast, that's unacceptable. So we're hiring. Go to irritable dad syndrome.com and go under jobs, and that way you you can send your resume to us, and uh we will have one of our people look through that and get back to you uh as soon as possible. Hey, what happened? Hey, did you vote yet? I did vote. Did you? When did you vote? I went and voted. I think I went and voted the same day you did. Was it Saturday? Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Early voting and tonight. Not getting political, but anybody who says, I didn't have time to go out and vote, you're full of I am gonna get political. They have uh early voting has been open for over three weeks now. And if you don't go vote, that's on you, Chief.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna say, uh no, I'm not gonna get political. I am gonna say this.
SPEAKER_03Uh we I can't I'll get political. I can't wait until this selection's over with.
SPEAKER_04Uh I did a write-in. Uh because there was there was one, I don't know, it was only one of the justices you were allowed to write in an uh a separate name than the person. So there were a lot of people on the ballot. There was only one person running for like dog catcher or fluffer of uh Butler County.
SPEAKER_03I thought that was an appointed position. I did too. Now, if there's one person running, then just let them have it. Or her. Just let her have it. Let them. Yeah, but now, whenever that comes up, the one person, even if they're uh the the party that I don't want to vote for, yeah, I still vote because I'm afraid that my ballot is going to have an empty slot on there, and it may show up as uh something was wrong with it.
SPEAKER_04Well, I did I did both. I did not vote on one of them, and then the other one, it was a party that I don't like. Uh-huh. So I wrote in Getty Lee.
SPEAKER_03So he's Canadian.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It's possible.
SPEAKER_03I voted for the Whig party.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I mean, Rush was in Cincinnati this week. Yes. It got Cincinnati on the brain. There were a lot of people because I wore my the Rush in Cincinnati based off the WKRP shirt. Yeah. I got stopped. I've been stopped by so many people to talk about that shirt. Yeah. More than any other shirt.
SPEAKER_03Isn't that something like you can wear a three-piece suit and nothing, but yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and it they're all over 50. Uh, there was one woman which surprised both me and Bess. It was one of the poll workers. They do like, we're all kind of, she's like, Did you see the concert? And I wanted to, you know, it's one of those dumb questions. It's like, I'm wearing the shirt.
SPEAKER_03Well, now listen, some I have several concert t-shirts that people have bought me. Like when I was younger, my uh older brother went to a show, and then he after he outgrew it, then I wore it or something. I've got concert shirts that to the show that I did not go see.
SPEAKER_04Granted. But I had two guys stop me in Kroger and talk to me at length about 2112 and Red Barchetta, and I told the one guy they played the whole moving pictures album, and he in the middle of Kroger, sort of salivating women and children, everybody's driving around, he goes, Son of a bitch. It was somebody's dad. And I don't know if you've seen many rush fans. Rush fans look like somebody's dad. You know, it's not, you know what I mean? It's like a dude in like jeans and a members-only jacket.
SPEAKER_03And uh it's like Walter White in season one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like a guy that you're you're gonna hold the door open and say, uh, can I carry your bags for you, sir? Imagine that guy going, son of a bitch moving pictures. Oh my gosh! Can't believe I missed that. Mother scratch. It was great, right there, right by the MMs in the popcorn.
SPEAKER_05By the M's.
SPEAKER_04I will, I will let me sidetrack real quick since I've gone down this road. Yeah. Uh so I saw the Rush shirt. So that Rush was in Cincinnati. They have the shirt that looks like WKRP. I thought, as a Cincinnatian, I need to go down there and get that shirt. I truly was just going to do that. On the way, literally, whilst driving, and the Statute of Limitations is over because this was on Friday.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04Um, I pulled up Sub Up. I'm like, if there's a ticket that's reasonable, I may just go to the show. Yeah. And uh the floor seats were a thousand plus. There were a few that were six and seven hundred dollars.
SPEAKER_03That's a little pricey.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Resale scalpers. Yeah. And then I saw one that was $800 and then a refresh, $600, a refresh, five, a refresh, four. I pulled over, like refreshed, and it got down to like two, two twenty or two thirty, and I'm like, holy this guy's panicking. And it got to the point where when you refreshed it, you see that ticket, and then the very next ticket was like $500 in the bowl. Yeah. And I'm like, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta do it. And I did it. You call him up, I'll give you 30 bucks of cash. But at that point, I went from just leisurely going down to the show to get a t-shirt to tearing ass down the highway to get to the show. Right, right, right, right. I made it like five minutes before they took the stage. And I had a guy, I'm gonna try, I'm trying to be a nicer person. I had a dad, of course, sitting next to me. Uh-huh. And he started to tell me the history of Rush.
SPEAKER_03Like, okay.
SPEAKER_04He's he's like, uh, you you know that uh they they got famous in Cleveland from the from the working man. You know the working man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're from Canada. They're from Canada. You know, they used to open up for kids. It's it's Peart. It's Peart. Not Peared.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, which uh which on the video during the start. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Anyway. Are you eating my sandwich? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So he kept going and going, and I just let him roll because he was having fun. But the thing that bothered me, and I I was about to ask the usher.
SPEAKER_03You should have done what my wife would have done and said, which one plays bass? Yeah, yeah. And then you should have said, well, I mean, if he's that popular, how come I've never heard of? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Well, there's only three of them because one of them left the band. Anyway, right, right. Um, so he's going and going, and then during the show, Getty and Alex, they were a bit animated during this show. They were excited about it. They were playing a lot of faster stuff. Like they were Alex was shredding like insanity. Yeah. But anyway, they were telling jokes, and they were fun. They were some legitimately funny jokes, but this dude was howling with laughter.
SPEAKER_05Like, yeah, like hackling.
SPEAKER_04Like his laughter was violent. It was assaulting the head of the person in front of it, the back of the head. Uh-huh. And it got to the point where a couple of times I looked over at him, like, really, dude? Dude, can you I mean, you're loud enough to where Getty's gonna look up and say, Where's the douche back there? Can you? But he was a nice guy.
SPEAKER_03But in Canada they call it douche. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It was funny because he's, you know, I'm I'm sitting in the seat that I think might have been his wife's seat, and he had to panic sell it because he kept talking about how his wife wouldn't come. Right. And I'm like, dude, that's another problem.
SPEAKER_03I was like, it's got nothing to do with rush.
SPEAKER_04I was like, dude, this is my fourth rush show. You don't have to explain why your wife's not here. We all, all of us in this arena know. And it was not like Detroit. When we were at Detroit, there's a lot of women at Detroit. When it was a co-ed concert, this was new. Yep. There was the dude next to me brought his wife on the other side. I think her and one of the ushers is the only women I saw. And they were chanting during the 212 and doing the whole thing. I'm happy that I went. I'm sorry. I did I wasn't expecting to be able to even get a ticket. Oh no, I didn't know.
SPEAKER_03Well, I was he was I did say I wish Mike had told me because I would have had him pick me up a t-shirt. But then under in that same breath, I'm like, Darren, you went to see Collective Soul and you didn't call Mike and say, Do you want me to get you a t-shirt? So, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04What's what why why would you think about that? I considered getting you one. I did, briefly. And I feel happy, I like Louis Decay. I feel good about having the thought.
SPEAKER_02We didn't actually have to do the thing. And that's where we're gonna leave it.
SPEAKER_04I'm happy that I had the thought.
SPEAKER_02You're listening to Irritable Dad Syndrome. Check out more great episodes at our website, irritable dad syndrome.com.

SPEAKER_03set.
SPEAKER_04The full set. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Libby and I went to see Collective Soul. We went to the Hard Rock Cafe Casino in Cincinnati. And a couple years ago, when we went to see the Hooties and the Blowfishes, Can you say that? Yeah, the Hooties and the Blowfishes, Collective Soul opened up for them, and as good as they were, I was disappointed in their show because it was a short set. They only played like nine songs. And one of them, they had to sing along with Edwin McCain because he decided to run it out on stage to sing along with them. And I like Edwin McCain, he's fine, but I didn't come to see Edward McCain. I came to see Collective Soul. I was bummed, and I'm like, I want to go back and see Collective Soul when they do a whole frickin' set, just them, and that's what we got, kids. They were amazing. Ed Roland, remember Haywood Banks? Oh yes, he looks like Haywood Banks. Ed Roland looks exactly like Haywood Banks. Now, if you're listening right now and you don't know who I'm talking about, go to your Google and there's a thing that says images. Click on that. Yeah. And then click Ed Roland now. Yeah. And then uh look up Haywood Banks.
SPEAKER_04Or better yet, go to our website and look up Haywood Banks because you'll see it there too.
SPEAKER_00People always say, What do you like most? I don't want to brag.
unknownI don't want to boast.
SPEAKER_00I always tell him I like toads.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, toast.
SPEAKER_03I'm just watching the show laughing and looking at these like what? And I'm like, my god, he looks just like Haywood Banks now. But he sounds great. He does. He sounds absolutely great. And two of the songs they played the other night, they did not play when we saw him opening up for Hootie. They did Why Part 2. Oh, how can you not why would you not do that song? Yeah. And then they did Gel.
SPEAKER_04And Libby lost Let's get together now.
SPEAKER_03And make it world.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Libby lost her mind. Yeah. Libby was dancing and hooting and hollering and just having the time of her life. So I'm so thrilled that I took her because they are her favorite band and they are great. And if you get an opportunity to see them, go because they are one of the most underrated bands out there. They are.
SPEAKER_04They should be a lot more. They were huge.
SPEAKER_03Yes. They're still big. Yeah, they should be way more popular than they are. They've had seven number one songs. Seven. That's crazy. Seven number one songs. And uh they got a brand new album out called Touch and Go. It's a tribute to 80s uh uh uh new new wave music. They were big fans of the cars, so anyway, we went to see that. It was great, and you gotta go.
SPEAKER_02Venomous Beaver.
SPEAKER_03Something happened to me that's never happened before, and this time I got a picture of it and I posted it on my Facebook page. I went to go get gas, and I pull up to the pump and I'm throwing some gas into the car, and I look up, and they're on top of the gas pump are of four chicken nuggets.
SPEAKER_04I mean, Casey's has been really doing a lot of outreach lately to try to bring in new customers.
SPEAKER_03And so is that UDF trying to hey, come for the gas, stay for the nuggets type thing? Yeah, I resisted the urge to eat the nuggets, even though they looked they looked like they hadn't been touched by anything. So uh so yeah, I didn't I didn't eat the chicken nuggets. Story goes nowhere.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Mom calls me up and she says, I'm begging you, I need your help. Bad. Um I thought, oh my god, what's wrong? Her TV, she had accidentally somehow turned on audio description. Oh god. Everything that happens, man walks across the floor and he picks up a tennis racket, he throws the ball in the air, he hits the ball onto the opposing side of the court, the other man hits the ball back. He returns the ball. It's every channel, and when you turn the volume, volume up. Channel change to channel 42. She cannot for the life of her, and she is about to lose her mind. It's like her TV is possessed. So I go over there and I've got to go on Google and look up the directions, and and then with her type of TV, and even though I have her type of TV and the Google directions, the directions still don't exactly follow. Yeah. It takes me probably 15 minutes of what the up no. I finally, finally got it turned off, and the sigh of relief from my mother, she was, I think I'm her favorite child. But the question is, how do you accidentally turn that on when you cannot intentionally turn it off? And why is the feature there to begin with?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Inconceivable. That's my mom's TV does that. We just left it on. Well, it it announced it doesn't it doesn't describe everything, but it announces the channel that you're on and what the show is.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04Which is fun if you're going on to a uh uh like flipping through and there's something particularly um interesting, let's say, coming on. Right. Channel 43. Yeah, drunken nude wrestling both.
SPEAKER_03Whoa, you know, your wife's your wife's in the next room. What are you watching? Yeah. I don't know because we did that at home a couple years ago. I have no idea how we accidentally turned it on. Our because it took forever to intentionally turn it off. It's not a one-button thing.
SPEAKER_04I consider myself to be relatively technically competent. That not with this podcast, but with other things. And for some reason, the TV, our TV upstairs, for years, I'm talking years, had the auto motion thing where it makes everything look like a soap opera. You know what I'm talking about?
SPEAKER_03It's called the soap opera disc the soap opera effect. Now every or the soap opera effect.
SPEAKER_04This TV back behind us had that, and I turned it off in the first 20 seconds of turning it on, right? You go to the settings, you find that option, you over to off, and it's done. Right. I did that upstairs, and it worked for like a few minutes and then it comes back on. That's it. And the next time I turn it on, and it just kept going and going and going until I figured out that it will default to a setting that has that, unless you choose for it to not default to that setting. Yeah. You choose a new default setting, which is not how default works. No. When you we if you have a default setting, you shouldn't have to choose a new default setting. The default setting should be the default setting.
SPEAKER_03I like how you call it the default default. Like John Default.
SPEAKER_04Default is more proper and it's more formal version.
SPEAKER_03But why is the soap opera setting there? Who watches TV like that?
SPEAKER_04Well, ever since Peter Jackson put the hobbits in the soap opera, people have that all the time now. So it's Peter Jackson's fault. Peter Jackson's fault. But yeah, it's like for years I would not watch that guy. The family would want to watch a movie upstairs. I can't. I can't. No. It doesn't look like John Wicks rescuing his dog. It looks like Keanu Reeves is running through a building trying to get a terrier. It doesn't, it's not cinematic. Right?
SPEAKER_03No, it's not.
SPEAKER_04It's it's Tom Hanks is not on an island.
SPEAKER_03It looks like crap. It looks awful. It really does. So we've got a comment that our podcast, for our viewers who watch, this should have the audio description. Mike covers his head. Darren sits down. Darren messes with the microphone.
SPEAKER_04Darren drinks a glass of water. There was a long period of time through the 90s, especially on like C-SPAN.
SPEAKER_03You know what's getting to a point where I don't remember the 90s.
SPEAKER_04Close caption. There was close caption. There was a job. Some boring ass, useless person, and I'm sorry, I don't want to judge, would have to watch this watch the no offense to all you boring people to all you boring people and type what the people were saying.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's right. That was a job. That's right.
SPEAKER_04And that's gone now. It's all automatic. Yeah. You see our stuff has captions. Ain't nobody doing that. No. That's that's the AIs.
SPEAKER_03We fired them a long time ago.
SPEAKER_04AI stole that job.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04I feel bad for those people.
SPEAKER_03I do too.
SPEAKER_04Because I remember when we were when I was at the OUs and we would have the like a Friday or Saturday night, we're up way too late, and the TV's on, and and just me and Box or me and Tay are watching it, and I was like, who's up typing this? Like right now. Yeah. Somebody was typing it. Yeah. And later I figured out that TV stations will tape shows and then play them.
SPEAKER_03And then play, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So one mystery solved, but still, originally there was a typer, a typist. Speaking of Damn, this episode sucks.
SPEAKER_03Does it? Speaking of recording the shows, when I worked at WJHL, I was there one night, uh, I was working late, and the feed for Jeopardy was coming down. And so I was like, it was nine o'clock, and I said, Why is Jeopardy not so late? And the one of the engineers says, That's just the feed. We recorded at this time, we air it three days later. So they recorded it in advance. So I watched that entire episode of Jeopardy. Uh-huh. Three days later, when it comes on, I was walking through the newsroom to had my lunch, and I said to them, I'm like, uh, where is Topeka, Kansas? Who is who is James K. Polk?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03This reporter was just like, how the hell do you? I was like, Bill Murray. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Who is Roddy Peker? What is this?
SPEAKER_03Where is what is Sydney, Australia? I never told her. She still thinks I'm probably smart as hell.
SPEAKER_04What is flaccid?
SPEAKER_05That's right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You put something on your Facebook page the other day that I thought was hilarious. You and Bess got in a fight or an argument or a discussion, however you want, about the horse that looks like Robert Redford. Why was she mad at you?
SPEAKER_04She was she was doing something in the other room. Uh-huh. She I think she was on the phone. Okay. And I'm like, Bess, come here. And she's like, what? She's like, I'm busy. And I'm like, no, you have to see that. You have to come here. Because it was so just to paint the whole picture here, the computer upstairs, we I chose the thing where it just like randomly finds wallpapers, right? It's a Microsoft thing. It'll just find random wallpapers on the computer. Yeah. So every time I sit down, every day, it's a different background picture. And this one was the horse that looks like Robert Redford. Uh-huh. Right? So I saw it. I'm like, you have to get in here. She's like, what? This is an emergency. I you need to see this. And we'd been, because she knows I've been doing, you know, stuff with our our money and moving things around and everything.
SPEAKER_03So you've been going through a lot of stress. Going through a lot of stuff.
SPEAKER_04And she comes, she's like, What? I was like, do you think that looks like Robert Redford? And she just like, oh my God. I know it's me, but tell me, that looks like Robert Redford. She's like, I can't believe yes, it does, but I can't believe you made me come in here like this. I was like, yeah, it does. It does. It looks like Robert Redford. So then I I posted it. She was pissed. I thought I saw it as emergency. Uh-huh. I thought it was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I told her. I mean, yes, she had to, she was in the middle. I think she was doing work. I don't know what she was doing. It was important. Uh-huh. But this was more important. You can't tell me that that. And what bothers me It was the eyes.
SPEAKER_03It was those dreamy blue eyes.
SPEAKER_04What cracks me up is there's nothing on there other than the horse's face that says they know it was Robin. But I know that photographer was thinking, oh, look at that. You know? It's like if you found a possum that looked like Matthew McConaughey, you gotta you gotta snap that.
SPEAKER_03Well then, you know, in context, since that was your story, it reminded me of you farted so loud it spooked the horses. So then I'm laughing about that too. And uh yeah. I didn't know that you made her get off the phone to come in.
SPEAKER_04I made her she I think she was she was doing something. I think she was doing work, or she might have had marbles may have been laying on her or something. She kept saying, This better be an emergency. I this is ridiculous.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I'm like, get in here. What is your favorite sound effect that we use to censor out curse words? Tell us now on our website, irritable dad syndrome.com.
SPEAKER_03So we talked a lot about the Blair Witch project. I watched that again. It holds up. It does hold up. It does, it really holds up. Yeah. The the was it Mike? Is that the Mike? Yeah. I I don't like that guy. He threw the map away. He threw it in the river.
SPEAKER_00I threw it in the river. It wasn't doing good for you, but it was doing good for me.
SPEAKER_03She said, Heather said. So yeah, I watched it again and uh it really holds up. I really liked it, especially since I mean, you know, it was made with for like what $50 or something. I can't. I think a $7,000 budget, and it made over $250 million. So I went down a Blair Witch rabbit hole. Oh, and I tried watching they made another Blair Witch. Book of Shadows. No, I didn't see that. I watched the one in 2016. Oh, they tried to remake the dude wanted to go back and try to find his sister who made the documentary. I got about 10 minutes into that. Wasn't it good? And no, I couldn't get into that.
SPEAKER_04You know, yeah. The Book of Shadows was panned and people hated it. I thought it was pretty good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I enjoyed it. And I I walked in, I went into it, you know. Like if I if you tell me you hate something, yeah, I'm gonna do everything I can to like it, just to spite you. I know you, I know you and I saw I went in ready to hate watch this thing. I just like the whole time, I'm like, this is actually kind of this is kind of good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's kind of interesting. But the actress who played Heather, uh-huh, they had to be in on it. So they had to let everybody think that they actually died. So they couldn't do press or publicity or whatever. I guess they had to stay uh in an undisclosed location with the vice president. Yeah, with fuel for nobody shouldn't go and kill him with fuel. But so anyway, she was said that you know they couldn't do any of that, and for the longest time people really thought she was dead, uh-huh, and then she got typecast and couldn't get any significant roles. When the movie they they each got like a couple of thousand bucks for making it.
SPEAKER_04The three of them made next to nothing for making it like some Ritz crackers, a uh blow pop.
SPEAKER_03When the movie made over a hundred million dollars, you know what the move the production company did? What they gave them a fruit basket.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_03A fruit basket. So here it is 20 26 years later, and I'm pissed. Yeah. It's just like it's ridiculous. And so movie's really good. Cameron had never seen it. Uh-huh. And uh mom had seen it, and and of course Libby and I had seen it. So we're watching it over again, and I cannot wait. I cannot wait to see the the ending to see if Cameron figured it out. And he didn't figure it out. Was it Nate Bragazzi who said it was more believable to think that a wife would go years without talking to him? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Without him actually being dead. But oh, spoiler alert, he's dead the whole time. Yeah. But that's another one that holds up. So if you're uh if you're bored and looking for something to watch, watch Blair Witch or the The Six The Six Senses.
SPEAKER_04We we talked about the Blair Witch the other episode, and we made a video for that, and we made a video for the Metallicas, and those have been our most highly engaged posts. People are hate uh engaging with us. Oh, oh left and right. Okay, they've so they're not they're not happy with that. And I want to talk about some of it. Okay, all right. So the the Blair Witch, if somebody has a problem with what we say about how things were in the 90s, uh-huh, and I look at their picture and they look like they're 20-something, I get all old man McGill Cutty on. I'm like, I was there. Yeah, so somebody was condescending to like, well, and I made a mistake in the video. I said uh it was the your little brother Skippy on YouTube. YouTube didn't exist, but there was internet video, right? You dig your impressions, Skippy.
SPEAKER_00You know, so and then I said, I still follow him.
SPEAKER_04Which was awesome, by the way. Uh good times. But anyway, yeah, so yeah, YouTube, YouTube wasn't around, but there was internet video. There was there were documentaries on the interwebs about it. But I've got all these people, I don't know how many comments. Uh, YouTube wasn't until 2005, yeah. Blair Witch came out and I okay, okay. It wasn't YouTube, yeah, right. Right. And then a bunch of things like I saw the video on the thing, you must have seen something else, and you thought it was that, or you saw the sequel. Telling me what I saw. Right.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So I want to say a couple things.
SPEAKER_03One Mike, okay, Mike makes a lot of mistakes. I do. A lot of mistakes. Right. But by God, he remembers what movie he saw, when he saw it, and where he saw it.
SPEAKER_04So we don't fact check ourselves.
SPEAKER_03And we're proofread names. And we're 50 plus. Yes. Right? Yes.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04Uh, so suck it. And then the other one was the Metallicas. Now, this one actually did piss me off because some of the things were like, well, clearly you never listen to Metallica. Oh, and one of them was from a dude who looked like he was maybe 22 or 23 and said, uh, you must have just started listening to the band. You don't know anything about them. And I wanted to comment, I'm trying to be nice, but I wanted to comment, I have been listening to them since before twice your age at this 80s? I mean, good God.
SPEAKER_03Since you were a dirty thought in your dad's mind. Yeah. Yeah. You've been with the Metallica since day one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Well, no, I will say uh ride the lightning. That's where I entered the Metallica land. Okay. That was my first tape.
SPEAKER_03That was their second one. That was their second, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Their second uh thing. Yeah. Uh we called them tapes back then. What was the first? It was uh Kill Em All. Kill 'em all.
SPEAKER_03Ride the lightning, master puppets. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04If this ends up being a video, I don't want to hear it. Yes, I know they did garage the garage tape. We're not talking about that. Listen, we grew up in the 80s and 90s.
SPEAKER_03We listened to cassettes.
SPEAKER_04We listened to cassettes. You had to listen to the first officially released thing of the thing. Yeah. Yes, much later they'll find the secret tape that Getty made uh from the tape recorder when he was riding the horse on the way to play the first album. Yeah. And that'll get released on the interweb somewhere. But back then, you had to go with what the first thing was. The very first thing was Kill Em All, and hardly anybody had that thing when it first came out. I know. Ride the Lightning was the one that hit Huge, and then Master Puppets hit Huger, and then uh Well.
SPEAKER_03And Justice, from what I know, okay.
SPEAKER_04My first exposure And huge in relative terms for a thrash metal band.
SPEAKER_03My earliest uh liking to uh was And Justice for All. Because one got a lot of play on the MTVs. Okay. And I know a handful of people who I went to high school with, they heard that, and then they went back and started listening to some of the earlier stuff, which people do that all the time.
SPEAKER_04That happens all the time. You find what you like, and then you try to find the album cover that looks most similar to the one that you like. We didn't know what we were doing. Columbia House would send us stamps. That's what I'm doing now. And they would say, put eight stamps on here for a penny, and then you're signed up for uh like a timeshare in Guatemala's.
SPEAKER_03200 albums for the rest of your life.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_03And and how did they go out of business?
SPEAKER_04At $35 an album. That's what always cracked me up. And all you had to do was get your eight free albums and then have your mom call and cuss them out and get you out of the club and then reapply.
SPEAKER_03I just ignored all the uh all the they I even got a letter from one of their attorneys saying they didn't want to press any charges on that. Oh shit, I'm gonna get in trouble if mom sees this, so I threw it away. That's right. Well, I mean that's they're out of business now. Yeah, sorry.
SPEAKER_04That's how I got into a lot of the band. I rushed. That's how I came to rush. I got presto because it was the coolest looking. It was like a the tape with the bunnies on it. Yeah, got that. Well, we just went off the road.
SPEAKER_03And then we like metallic.
SPEAKER_04We love metallic.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we do.
SPEAKER_04I yeah, it's I don't know. It's and and people would tell me uh the the comment I kept getting was James Hetfield has said that at every show since the 80s. No. No, I've seen two of those shows and he didn't say it either one of them.
SPEAKER_03I watched the Norm McDonald documentary on Netflix. Is it good? It is so good. Okay, it is really, really good because Judd Apatel uh hit because I'm like, what's he gonna tell me that I don't already know? Because you know, I thought I knew a little bit about Norm MacDonald. Yeah, but I mean apparently he told some people that he dropped out of high school, and then there's records that he graduated high school. He's told people, I know I didn't go to college. Well, you know, who goes to college, right? College, you know, you you hear about these uh universities, yeah, right? Apparently he did go to college. He talks about his uh wife, and then he tells people that he was never married. He I'm like, I I I just I wasn't paying attention, I was just listening to all the jokes in between the stories, and uh, but it's brilliant. It really is brilliant because they just just took existing he I don't think he did any new interviews at all. Yeah, it was all existing uh I need to watch it. It's so good.
SPEAKER_04Did you see the um there's uh guy, what the hell? I can't remember his name. He was in um Jerry McGuire with Tom Cruise. He wasn't Tom Cruise's. Cuba Gooding Jr. No, the other guy. The blonde guy that he's uh Glenn Fry. He's a comedian. Oh, he's a writer, he wasn't ended up being a writer for Saturday Night Live.
SPEAKER_03Oh, he is yes, and he does a great he does great impressions. Christopher Walken of several people anyway.
SPEAKER_04He was telling a story about when they were writing a sketch for Chris Farley, where Chris Farley is that the drive-thru, and he's ordering 14 cheeseburgers and 14 hamburgers and 14 fries and 14 pies and 14 shakes and blah blah blah blah blah. And then the person says, Is that all? Uh-huh. And then they they were like, Okay, pause, and we'll come back to it. You you know you know where I'm going. And so they said the writers, it was like one or two in the morning, uh-huh, and they're they can't figure out what's the next thing. Like, what does he just do the order again or whatever? Yeah. And then they said from the couch, they hear, hey, you guys talking about Chris Farley. Uh-huh. And they're like, they didn't even know that Norm was in the room. He's like, he's like, uh, is it and he orders all the burgers and everything, and then the lady says, uh, is that all? And he says, Yes. He said, they died. They died laughing. It's all in the delivery.
SPEAKER_03And Norm can do that. The lack of punchline is the punchline.
SPEAKER_04And they said when the when they actually did the sketch, Chris Farley, the way he delivered it was like with pride. He's like, Yes. And he was like, it killed. I thought for sure he was gonna say in a diet coke.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I've been on a documentary kick. I watched the Norman uh um Norman. Um I watched the Martin Mole documentary, which was great. I watched the Norm McDonald documentary. The Martin Short one is really good. Okay, and I didn't think there was anything about Martin Short that I wouldn't have already known because I uh got his uh autobiography, which was fascinating. Yeah, so cool. But there's a lot of really cool comedian documentaries on the Netflix right now.
SPEAKER_04I gotta watch the Norm one. I I saw uh there was a comedian, and I I wish I could remember, I just saw this yesterday. I I can't remember which comedian it was, but he was on Howard Stern and he was talking about Norm. And he said what blue is Jay was it Jay Moore. Jay Moore's the one that I was trying to think of earlier. But Jay Moore. I wonder if it was it might have been. He said that that Norm would have a line in his head that he would want to get to. Like he would get up on stage and he didn't care about bombing. No, but he personally thought it was funny. He got enjoyment out of people being uncomfortable while they were watching him. So he would just meander the story to get to the funny part, and it would kill. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Right? Yeah. But then they would just meander to the next funny thing. Actually, it was Norm McDonald himself was doing the interview with Howard Cern and talking about this. And and so like Howard Cern was like, So you you just you don't have any jokes, you just get up here, he's like, uh, some funny stuff happens, but uh I don't know what I'm gonna say.
SPEAKER_03Well, they showed that clip from the celebrity roast of what's his face from Full House. Oh, Sagitt, Bob Sagittarius, and he loves Bob Saget, and he's such a friend and just cares for a while. He was doing the old style, yeah. He's he's so short that everyone else in the room is taller than he is. And they gotta look down to make eye contact. Right? And Norm was famous for that long stare at the camera, yeah. And he would just pause and it would get uncomfortable. And the more uncomfortable he got, the happier he was. Oh, and so I I am my claim to fame.
SPEAKER_04This is this is a weird claim to fame, but I remember seeing Norm in his first special on HBO. The it used to be the one-night stand, the 30-minute specials.
SPEAKER_03The half-hour comedy hour.
SPEAKER_04Half an hour comedy hour. Yeah. Uh what one night stand was somewhere else. It was comedy central. Comedy central, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Whatever the the maybe MTV had the half-hour comedy hour. Who cares?
SPEAKER_04It doesn't matter. Yeah, uh the point is it was Norm. He was, I mean, young Norm. He was like in his twenties or I don't know how old he was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and wait about 89.
SPEAKER_04He still did the same, it was the thing. He was just like, I was driving down the road there, you see? Yeah, you been in them. You been in the car. Yeah. There was a cow there. Yeah. Yeah? Uh huh. He was like Moose by the side of the road there. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So the cow there.
SPEAKER_04I remember as a little as a kid watching this being like, this is weird.
SPEAKER_00When's he gonna tell a joke? When's he gonna tell a joke?
SPEAKER_04And I remember laughing a couple times. But then after that, uh-huh, I was a Norm fan because when I would see him again, like on Letterman or you know, Conan, or whenever he would show up, or we'd do a new special, I'd be like, oh, this is the dude that just says and it's and then I was laughing when no one else was laughing. And I think that's when I started getting and now it's like Miss Norm.
SPEAKER_03Well, my kids, I drive them absolutely crazy because I asked them, Can you can you go out in the garage and get me uh my hammer out in the garage? And they're like, in the what? You know, the garage where we have the car, you know, and my hammer in the the garage. And they they they like, God did, please call it the garage. But I call it the garage because Norm tells that joke. Hey, you know, so I was uh I was standing out behind the garage there, you know, I was smoking a cigarette, you know, out there behind the garage. And so my dad comes home and he sees me smoking that cigarette there, you know, behind the garage. And he brings me in home, brings me in the house there, says, Oh, you want to smoke? So he gives me this uh this cigar, you know, and he says, Go ahead, smoke the whole thing there, buddy, and and see how you feel. And I got real sick, and then I felt bad for smoking the cigarette behind the garage there, you know. So uh, you know, I learned my lesson there, you know. So that's like two or three years later, I'm out there behind the garage. This time I'm smoking a joint. So my uh my old man sees me out there behind the garage. And he brings me inside the house and he shoots me up with heroin. Long offered pause. And I'm like, oh my God. And since then, thank you to Norm McDonald.
SPEAKER_04I've got a two-car garage there, you know. My favorites for him is watching him when anytime he would show up on Letterman or Conan, when he would go to the couch and would start start launching in one of his long ass jokes. And the reason I liked it when he was on either one of those two guys, they knew the bit, right? And they would like it would be Letterman's like, I gotta do what was it? Was he I gotta do your act for you? He said you did math through like it's like I had my kid, it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. And then what happened to Orbit was like, uh I did crystal meth. No, I did skydiving. Skydiving skydiving was the most amazing thing I ever did, you know.
SPEAKER_03And then Conan Chairman of the board.
SPEAKER_04Well, when he was on Conan, he was doing the moth joke. Yes, and Conan just kept saying, I think his name changed there. And then Norm, the Norman started laughing, like, he went through a name J. Yeah, yeah. Just keep going.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of my garage, I think I've gotten rid of all the mice. No, good. I think they all moved over here. I think they did. I told you that, you know, we opened the garage the we opened the garage door one night, and this mouse just runs out of there, like, I'm getting the hell out of here. So we emptied out almost everything out of the garage, and we couldn't find any more mice. And then I bought these little packages. They're called mouse repellent, uh-huh, and they stink. They're like cinnamon and peppermint. It's really strong odor. Like people don't mind the smell, yeah, but apparently mice can't stand it. So I bought three or four packages of those uh mouse repellents and I put them in the four corners of the garage there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I was talking to mom and I said, Mom, I think I've got rid of all the mice in the garage. And she says, Well, I heard from somebody that if you have mice in your uh in your garage, they might be living in your walls. Okay.
SPEAKER_04What the hell was that? That's nice. That's good.
SPEAKER_03Now it's like, good night, everybody. Are there mice in the walls? I don't hear them in the walls.
SPEAKER_04I don't think you would hear them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03When we lived in Virginia as a kid, and we're this is a very, very, very rural area of Virginia. We had them in the attic, and you'd hear you could hear them running over your uh your room there in your ceiling. I'm like, there's nothing creepy about that. But anyway, so I just hope I don't have mice living in my walls. Wow. To get an exorcist.
SPEAKER_02You're listening to Irritable Dad Syndrome, part of this nutritious breakfast.
SPEAKER_00That's right.
SPEAKER_03Do you remember pencils in elementary school?
SPEAKER_04You'd use I use pencils now. Do you still use pencils? Like wooden, like I have a pencil sharpener in my office. Okay. I'm gone old school.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I never understood why the eraser was in nowhere near close to proportionate to the amount of lead in the pencil. Yeah. Because you could use the pencil for a solid week and you use the eraser for about an hour and a half.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then they had those weird erasers in the 80s you could stick on the end to make it look circumcised. Like the big big ass erasers. And that's just nobody wanted to use those for obvious reasons. Yeah. Yeah, well, you know exactly what I'm talking about, don't you?
SPEAKER_03Well, I I didn't know he was Jewish. But why did they give you such a small eraser? Well, just such a long pencil. Yeah. Yeah. That was a um God. One more thing. Before I went to the collective soul concert, we were eating at the Hard Rock Cafe. Uh-huh. And food's always good at the Hard Rock Cafe. And uh I we were done eating, we were getting ready to go and then walk around the place a little bit. Uh I went into the uh, I was gonna go to the bathroom, and as I'm walking in, I'm walking right toward the door that has men on the uh door right there at the sign. And this woman was standing there, she said, Are you going in the men's room? And I said, Yeah, yes, I am. Thinking that's a little personal, but yes I am. She said, Can you see if there's a Michael in there? And I said, Oh, sure. She says, No, can you yell Michael when you go in there? And I said, Okay, and what is your name? She said, Lauren. So I opened the door, Michael! Lauren's looking for you. Michael's standing right there, okay. And he said, Good to know. But she says, Can you yell, Michael? I can do that. You did that. I did, and you did well. We did her a what's called a solid bet. Guys, we're gonna go. There's more things on here, but I'm gonna save them for another time because it's not gonna beat the uh nothing's better than the circumcised pencil eraser. We want you to go to irritabledadsyndrome.com. You can download every episode that we have. They're all great except for the Halloween episode. Yeah, but to unload it anyway. Why not? What the hell? Might as well. What the hell?
SPEAKER_04What else you got to do?
SPEAKER_03Nothing. Nothing. Fill your pathetic life with uh episodes of Irritable Dad Syndrome. If you want to become a patron, hey, knock yourself out and do that. That'll make us oh my god, that'll make us so happy. And you'll be happy because you'll get free stuff, cool things, and and you'll feel better about yourself. And we hope to see you next week on Irritable Dad Syndrome.
SPEAKER_04Irritable Dad Syndrome is a Mike Odal Darren Cox production. We're recording now. Okay, but we're not live. Okay. But we're going to be live. Okay. Bess asked if I had the podcast tonight, and I said C. And she did the question mark. So I called her. I'm like, what the hell? You don't know Spanish? I didn't say that. I'm not gonna broadcast what I actually said.
SPEAKER_03Somebody wants to know what type of shorts I'm wearing, they're pajama bottoms. They are neither Scottish nor plaid. I enjoyed it guy. No, you didn't. No, I don't think you did.
SPEAKER_02I didn't. Jack, one, two, three. Oh, poor microphone. Darren, I've got literal gaff tape holding the spit screen on my microphone. I think Homeboy needs a new one. Okay. Time now for irritable dad syndrome. It won't get any better if you don't stop scratching it. Alright. That's a good one.
SPEAKER_03Hey, Paul, you like that Arlish show, Paul? You watch the Arlish?
SPEAKER_04Hi, I'm Darren. Hi, I'm Grand Matina. Damn it. Grandma Mike. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Let's get everything you need. Okay. Right there where you need it.
SPEAKER_04Before you sent a rundown, I saw it pop up when I was like. I have it okay. Um yeah. You can cut that out. That was more for you.
SPEAKER_03We talked a lot about the I've it's it's Okay. But there's that was it Nate Bag Bargatsy.
SPEAKER_04I got some ventils over there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Michael! Oh Lauren's looking for you. Recording stopped.
